TOAST
ONLY IN CALIFORNIA?
Kathy
writes: "I went to my Ty store here In Sacramento, CA to
get the new trade show beanies. She said they were only
allowed to get the lavender ones (toast) in California and other
states are getting just one color too. Have you heard any news
on this? The Toy store Owner said when she went to the Ty toy show.
That they were only allowed to order the lavender beanie , toast,
and one buddie. the pink one. They were told that these
were the only colors that California stores would get. The
other states would only get to order one color each also."
< my comments: If you have any further information on this subject to share please do. Lisa@planetbeans.com. If email bounces try pbeans@bellsouth.net. Thanks! >
Gayle writes: "we got toast, bubbly and fizz here in Ohio"
Ron writes: "Hi Lisa! Our local Hallmark Gold Crown store, in Northern Minnesota, has received all of the show exclusives, although they came weeks apart. Nothing was mentioned to the manager about a color exclusivity for different states, so I can only assume that some misinformation about their availability is swirling around out there in the greater "beanie world"! Toast did arrive much later than the rest, so maybe the other show exclusives are no longer available. I would think that the Ty reps could explain the availability if they were questioned. I sure do enjoy your site, newsletter and contests. We do appreciate all your hard work while juggling a family, and online informational site. Thanks. Ron"
Rene writes: "Hi, Lisa, I'm in California and so far I have found Fizz and Bubbly in the Hallmark here. I have not found Toast, yet. Maybe because Hallmark is a national store, they are able to get all of the trade show beanies? I haven't found any of them at other stores here. :) Rene"
Rose writes: "Hi Lisa I was able to pick up Toast in Niagara Falls NY. Also picked up Bravo the Buddie. Rose in Canada
Donna writes: "Hi Lisa, It's me Donna Newton, I live in Sacramento, Cal. also. I went to the Downtown Mall & got the pink, Fizz at Mark's hallmark, then I went to Old Sacramento & got the blue, Bubbly at Blueberry Hill. I couldn't find the purple toast. Happy hunting."
Joanne writes: "Hi Lisa Just wanted to say that regarding Toast Beanie, my retailer did not go to the show and I didn't figure I would be getting this one. Talked with a friend in New York and she called around to her retailer and they had it there in New York so not sure this is a "California Only" beanie."
Julia writes: "Lisa this is for Kathy. I am afraid someone has mislead you, I live in Ky and have found all 3 colors fizz, toast and bubbly. I hope you can get them all. Julia
Roe writes: "I live in Central IL. My local Beanie shop got all 3 of the trade show beanies in. Roe"

NEWS FROM SUE

writes: "Just an update to let you know that there is now a
page of information on the website about the celebrities who have
signed or who have agreed to sign various collectables for CHERISH
to auction on eBay this Autumn. Click
here to view the information
In addition there will be some unique, hard to find or otherwise interesting collectables up for auction. Further information about these will be added to the website at a later date, along with details of the actual collectables that have been signed.
My family has registered to take part in the Stride for Life in October. The event raises funds specifically for Breast Cancer Research. It is a 6 mile (usually circular) walk which is open to all the family and in some cases pushchairs and dogs can be taken along as well. We are taking part in the Marlow Stride for Life, which is on 12th October and I will be seeking sponsorship in due course! £500 has already been raised for that cause by the sale of special edition 'Pound for Pound' Blush Chubbley Bears at the Bears, Beans & Collectables Show at Chester Racecourse recently.
More good news is that there is now well over £5000 in the charity account so I have ordered a giant cheque to present this giant amount in the near future."

-- like most 8-year-olds -- pushed as hard as she could with her legs
against the grass under the swing set and tried to go as high as
possible.
Just a
little girl trying to get her feet to touch the June sky.
If only
she could just float off that swing and go past the clouds past the
stars to heaven where her daddy lives.
While
Lindsey rocked back and forth on the swing clutching on to some kitten
Beanie Babies, people were streaming into the funeral home to pay
their respects. Sometimes
we just don't know how fortunate we are. How we should thank God,
count our lucky stars, or just breathe a sigh of relief that in the
summer of our eighth year we weren't on a swing set clutching kitten
Beanie Babies while someone we loved more than life was lying
motionless inside.
Because,

UNBELIEVABLE
GARAGE SALE FIND Rene writes: Ok, I've always wanted this to happen to me. Today I saw a multi-colored beanie half way in a plastic container. (The lid had come off) It was in a 25 cent box. So I picked up the Peace, and saw these beautiful colors. I briefly looked at the tag to see if it was bent, and put the lid back on the box. I said to the guy there, "This was in the quarter box." He said, "That's fine. Everything's negotiable. If I had wanted a dollar or more for something, I had it marked." I thought I had made a good deal, as I've never paid just a quarter for a Peace. Then when I got home, I went to examine my purchase more closely and discovered there was no Peace sign! This is Garcia! One of the most beautiful Garcia's I've ever seen. It has pink cheeks and a tye-dyed blue center face. One ear is blue and the other is orange/yellow. The body if fully green and blue on the front. One arm is pink on top and the other is purple and blue. The only thing not mint is that there is price tag residue on the back of the tag. But, hey! for a quarter, I think I can live with that! You know, I almost feel guilty getting Garcia for that price...but the guy really didn't seem to care... |

You
might be a shopaholic
Turns
out 1 in 20 of us -- women and men alike -- can't control the urge to
spend. Learn what drives this destructive behavior.
Is your closet overflowing with never-worn
clothing, the price tags still waving in the breeze? Is your attic
bulging with boxes and boxes of shoes that have never touched
pavement? Do you buy new makeup weekly or compact discs by the
fistful?
You might be a shopaholic.
Studies estimate that as many as 17 million Americans, better than one
in 20 of us, can't control our urge to shop, even at the expense of
our job, our marriage, our family and our finances.
Real consequences
Manhattan psychologist April Benson, author of "I Shop
Therefore I Am: Compulsive Buying and the Search for Self," has
seen firsthand how destructive compulsive shopping can be.
"One patient of mine got fired because she was compulsively
shopping on the Internet all day. There are other people who neglect
their children and park them in the mall constantly because that is
what they need to feed their habit. Lots of marriages break up over
compulsive buying. In fact, we don't call it compulsive buying unless
there is some significant impairment in some aspect of your
life."
Famous
shopaholics
Nor is compulsive shopping a modern-day "designer
disease." According to Black, a German psychiatrist published the
first clinical description of the disorder in 1915.
Famous shopaholics in history include Marie Antoinette, Mary Todd
Lincoln, William Randolph Hearst, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Imelda
Marcos and Princess Diana. Their addictions ranged from clothing
(Jackie O, Diana) to art and antiques (Hearst) to shoes (the heralded
Marcos collection) to gloves (Mrs. Lincoln owned 84 pairs of them).
Some shopaholics have more eccentric tastes, though they are by far the minority. Black had one patient who was addicted to Beanie Babies, another who compulsively bought garden figurines; Benson treated a man who only bought compulsively for his camper. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

hooks and screw them into the ceiling then into the top of the seat then get
a small chain or cord to put in the holes of the eye screws and hang them or
you can get a hammock for stuffed animals that hangs from one corner to
another and fits alot of beanies in them. Hopes this helps. Monica
<my comments: Great suggestion Monica. If you can offer further suggestions please email me so that I may pass them along. All 3 of my kids are using the hammocks in their room. New
'True' Beanie baby here
Let the stampede begin.
Ty America, the maker of Beanie Babies, has introduced a new line of
plush, collectors' toys into Canada.
"It's great news," said Eilef Ausland, manager of The
Elements of Nature Toy Store and More at the Manitoba Children's
Museum.
Ty Canada went into receivership last spring, suspending the
introduction of new toys here.
But Ausland said the American parent company has now shipped the first
of the new Canadian line here -- a bear named "True."
"It's a thank you to Canadians for being loyal and so true,"
he said.

‘Killer’
dog attacks toys
I
live with a killer. He’s never threatened me, but he has killed and
eaten some of my best friends.
OK, so my real best friends, like Raggedy Ann and Lolly Dolly, are far
from his mouth’s reach. But still, my dog, Rory, can’t tell the
difference between my toys and his.
Back to Squeaky the Camel. He lasted quite a while, possibly because
Rory was also busy chewing back issues of Newsweek and Entertainment
Weekly. I bought a few other stuffed toys, but their life spans were
so short I don’t remember anything about them.
Rory is the true enemy of Beanie Babies. The first time he visited my
mom’s house, he thought she had provided him with a toy menagerie.
He had a whole basket of small animals to choose from, until
“Grandma” put the Beanies out of his reach. VIEW

Missing
Boy, 4, Found Through Amber Alert
LAKEWOOD,
N.J., Aug. 22 — New Jersey's Amber Alert system flashed into action
at 7 a.m. today, with radio stations and electronic message boards on
highways across the state spreading word of the apparent kidnapping of
a 4-year-old boy here by his baby sitter.
The boy was found three and a half hours later with the sitter and her husband, the authorities said. But they were still investigating late tonight and would not say exactly what had happened.
The boy, Eric Hernandez, was reunited happily with his parents, Karina Jimenez and Adaleberto Hernandez, at police headquarters here. As the police questioned the parents, the boy played with a Beanie Baby and a small racing car, Governor McGreevey said. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

would be the shelves where she would put her snow-globe collection and
possibly some of the 4,000 stuffed animals and/or Beanie Babies in her

Girls
use birthday gifts to bring joy to others
POTTSTOWN
-- Katie Bradley and Morgan Sweeney have been working hard to better
the lives of others since the time they started to walk.
The Perkiomenville girls recently celebrated their 11th birthdays by
throwing a joint party, but this was not your typical children’s
birthday party.
Six weeks before their birthdays -- Katie’s was Aug. 5, and
Morgan’s was Aug. 3 -- the girls decided they wanted to donate all
the gifts they received from friends and family to the children in the
pediatric ward of
Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.
Katie said she was inspired to donate her gifts because someone once
gave her a stuffed animal while she was getting stitches in the
hospital.
"I have enough stuff and I wanted to share," she said.
They spent several weeks preparing for the donation. Katie contacted
Janice Lunn, the volunteer services coordinator for the hospital, and
told her what they wanted to do. Once they got permission from the
hospital, the girls began to plan. They shopped for some gifts on
their own, and Morgan purchased 15 Beanie Babies for the donation at a
charity auction in support of the YMCA. VIEW

New
Pittsburgh: Local plush toy designers hope consumers will bite on Bed
Buggs
Tom
Mosser considers himself more qualified than most artists to create a
line of colorful dolls that he's betting will become a collectible
craze.
After all, the 43-year-old painter and illustrator spent seven years practically living inside a furry, lime-green bird costume from 1987 to 1994 when he was the Pirate Parrot, the city's baseball team mascot.
"I was paid to be a plush toy," said Mosser, who with partner David Noble created the dolls they call Bite-ables. They fit in your palm and feature Velcro mouths so that they will stick to backpacks, bikes, hats, clothing and computers. The first four characters in a series the partners plan to unveil are "Bed Buggs" that will be promoted with the catch phrase, "Let the Bed Buggs bite."
The last big collectible toy craze, Beanie Babies, peaked in the late 1990s.
"Beanie Babies have been dead for a couple of years," said Massa. "It's a great time to add a new collectible. People may be antsy to collect something again." Noble and Mosser are currently revising their prototypes and hope to have their final design on display at the annual toy fair held in New York in February. VIEW FULL STORY HERE
Rumors
of Khufu with One Hump
Bean
Watcher has this information posted as well as pictures so be sure
to VISIT GORDON HERE
The poem mentions camels having one hump or two. Some
collectors have suggested that the poem is a hint that there will be
two versions of Khufu -- one with one hump, another with two.
After reading these reports, I received my own shipment of four Khufus. I noticed that three had two protruding humps. The fourth had one protruding hump, and one "missing" hump. A close inspection of the area around the missing hump showed that it was dark brown in color. After further prodding, I found that the hump had actually been inverted, that is, it was pushed inside of the camel's back.
Be very
careful when responding to trade offers or sales of "one
hump" Khufus. It is easy to create a "one-hump"
version, take a picture at a strategic angle, and pass it off as a
variation (see the second photograph). If the area where the missing
hump is dark brown in color, then the hump is likely
"inverted" (see the third photograph). Be careful when
trading or buying, especially if you do not know the other party well.
Such steps will spare you from heartaches in the future!

Meg
Whitman on eBay's Self-Regulation
The
CEO explains how the site is all about the "millions of
entrepreneurs who maximize their own business on eBay"
When eBay CEO and President Margaret C. Whitman started at the online seller in 1998, its top-selling category was Beanie Babies. Today, eBay (EBAY ) is on track to host more than $20 billion in gross annual sales of everything from cars to industrial refrigeration units. Yet it isn't just the quality of merchandise -- or the quantity of business -- that distinguishes the online auction outfit. Whitman describes it as a "self-regulating marketplace" and points out that it's eBay's buyers and sellers -- not management -- who determine its direction. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

MESSAGE
FROM DAPHNE ABOUT THE CHESTER SHOW
Hello
from my chocolate-starved, Beanie carpeted house!
There's just a day to go to the Bears, Beans and Collectables Show at the Chester Racecourse, UK
The whole space - for manufacturers and exhibitors - is full. From plans for a small show, things just snowballed. I'm lucky that so many people have agreed to come and show their bear wares and for some key manufacturers to attend, too
I've had to suffer (in my least favourite way) in the name of the Show, with what looked like a huge pic (plus an editorial piece) in the local newspaper tonight ... just in time for some extra publicity, of course, so worth suffering the flash! The Show has been advertised in a mass of newspapers, publicised through radio stations and has appeared in "what's on" sections of all sorts of websites ... even on a BBC website. Web searches seem to throw up the Show continuously, so I think we've probably now done all we can to get the message out there
We're going to have an additional free draw at the Show, with a designer-signed BB&CM Creamy Chubbley Cub as the prize, for visitors who tell us how they heard about it.
We hope to be doing a final site update, with little snippets, some time Saturday
I shall make sure that we have coverage, with plenty of photos, in the October issue of Bean Bag and Collectables Magazine - out in September. I'll also try to get some early pics together so that you can see something of the day
I'm really grateful to all the collectable websites who've been so supportive in publicising this event. Here's hoping that it will be a success for everyone. If not, I hibernate ... ideally, with a huge supply of chocolate!
Regards
Daphne

Remembering
Sarah and Philip
550
congregate to say goodbye
There were stories and home movies, pictures pasted on poster board, and pictures set to music. Hundreds of pictures yesterday, at the memorial service for Sarah and Philip Gehring, which was both a celebration of their life and a chance for community and family to gather and mourn.
There were pictures of Sarah, who would have turned 15 this month, with a single candle on her first birthday cake, and as a teenager with braces. There were pictures of her mugging with friends in a Charlie's Angels pose, finger-guns readied, and of her clenching a rose between her teeth.
Philip was "a truly amazing person - a gift to all who knew him," Cook said. In drama, he knew everyone's parts. When he collected Beanie Babies, at the age of 5, Cook tried to present him with a cherished doll from her own collection. "But Joan," he said. "It's yours. Don't you want it?" VIEW FULL STORY HERE

the fact that in the last several years the office has undergone some

Ms. Champion gave small, yellow Beanie Baby bears to each woman in the

"Hi Lisa! I can only report on myself. I remain an avid Beanie

I will, however, probably be buying one of every Pluffie in creation
just because they're so soft.
I have just ended a short stint as a retail associate at a Zany Brainy
near me in the Northern VA suburbs of Washington, D.C. Their Ty
section is drastically reduced in size -- they just cannot get rid of
Boppers to save their lives, while the Beanie contingent is mostly
Hero right now. I don't think they've had a shipment arrive in some
time. This may have to do with the fact that the parent company, FAO
Inc., is trying to aggressively promote its own line of FAO Schwarz
plush.
In fact,
tell your readers something nifty: During the month of August, readers
who are already on a Zany Brainy mailing list will get a coupon in
their mailbox. Those who aren't can find it in an upcoming People
magazine with Drew Barrymore on the cover in a feature story about
young Hollywood brides. This coupon is good for one (1) Pets-to-Go
plush animal at any Zany Brainy store. Styles include a lion, a
leopard, a pig, a tabby kitten, and many dog breeds, such as black
Lab, yellow Lab, Rottweiler, basset hound, dalmatian, and poodle.
Pets-to-Go are about 7" or 8" long. They are not infant-safe
but are great for ages 3 and up. With the coupon, the plush is totally
free. They normally retail for $7.99.

Hailey
is tiny - not much bigger than an infant. But she's energetic. As soon
as her mother puts her into her walker, Hailey straightens up, pushes
off, and scoots across the floor.
Her sister Mya is not far behind, hardly bothered by the oxygen tank attached to her walker.
A few minutes later their brother, Colby, joins them, bouncing merrily in his swing.
Bright-eyed, smiling, the children are as active as any other one-year-old -- but at under 12 pounds each, they're more the size of newborns.
Four hours later, Aida saw her children for the first time. The babies were in an incubator, their eyes covered with visors. They trembled as a machine pushed oxygen into their lungs in pulses. They were smaller than the Beanie Babies that held down their oxygen lines, smaller than a coffee cup. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Stuffed

The 143
different surgeries his body has endured isn't what Caleb Nelson hopes
will make the most impact in his young life.
It's the furry faces that are next to him after the anesthetic wears off.
Receiving Beanie Babies, teddy bears and other stuffed pals are a post-op tradition for the 16-year-old, who is comforted by his new friends.
"I was surprised. It brought a smile to my face, it made me happy," he said, as a wise one overcomes his visage.
"Every time, I'd wake up with a new one."
Nelson hopes this joy will fill the souls of Russian orphans, the soon-to-be recipients of the stuffed animals that saw him through some of the most difficult and painful times of his life.

A LITTLE BOY SMILE UPDATE update: Given the age of this baby I HIGHLY recommend you remove the hang tags before sending Beanies. As you know.. tagged Beanies are recommended for ages 3 years and up and Baby James is only 9 months old. :oD Also know that as a 9 month old baby, James will be putting the Beanies in his mouth so please make sure the Beanies you send are from a smoke free environment and clean. from yesterday: Arlene shares information about this special little boy who belongs to her Pastor, Steve Babbitt and his wife Tammie. Baby James is 9 months old and suffers from the dreaded disease, Cystic Fibrosis. Arlene has updated us often in the Planet Beans Yahoo! Group so the members there know a bit about how hard this disease can be on a little one like Baby James and we know how hard this is on the parents watching their little one suffer. Just look at that adorable little face! Pastor Steve writes: " James is in the hospital again with a potentially chronic lung infection. He is also getting a feeding tube implanted so that he can start to gain more weight. He is 9 months old and weighs just over 13 pounds. Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening disease that affects the lungs and the digestive system. It can lead to under nutrition as well as lung damage and even death. For more info, see the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: www.cff.org " I think it would be great if some Beanie friends would send a Beanie or two to this special little boy. You know how I am about helping a good cause and this little boy could stand to gain a few smiles in his young life. If you would like to help please email me at Lisa@planetbeans.com for the email address for Pastor Steve and the address in which you can mail your donations. |

The
eBay Economy
The company is not just a wildly successful
startup. It has invented a whole new business world
Maybe the folks at eBay Inc.'s annual analyst conference in
late 2001 were simply too dazzled by the Web marketplace's blockbuster
financial results. Or maybe they had heard one too many dot-com
platitudes to heed yet another one. Whatever the reason, when Chief
Executive Margaret C. Whitman had the audacity to describe eBay as a
"dynamic self-regulating economy," no one in the room even
blinked. This overgrown flea market -- an economy?
From its humble origins as a trading post for Beanie Babies, eBay is
indeed morphing into something entirely new -- and a lot bigger than
most people realize. This year, at least 30 million people will buy
and sell well over $20 billion in merchandise -- more than the gross
domestic product of all but 70 of the world's countries. More than
150,000 entrepreneurs will earn a full-time living selling everything
from diet pills and Kate Spade handbags to $30,000 BMWs and hulking
industrial lathes. More automobiles, of all things, sell on eBay than
even No. 1 U.S. dealer AutoNation. So what does this add up to?
"This is a whole new way of doing business," says Whitman.
"We're creating something that didn't exist before." VIEW

INTRODUCING
THE TRADE SHOW EXCLUSIVES
Bravo
Buddy, Toast Beanie, Bubbly Beanie, and Fizz Beanie: http://www.ty.com/Trade_Show_Exclusive
Whip
inflation now
We've
all seen sudden price spikes, from Beanie Babies to baseball cards.
But what makes all prices go up, more or less in unison? The shorthand
answer is an overheated economy, where labor is in short supply and
can't keep up with the demand for goods and services.
This sidesteps the question of what, precisely, gets the economy to the boiling point in the first place. The economist Milton Friedman's answer was that inflation is, at all times, a monetary phenomenon. In other words, it comes from the government's overproduction of money. Money, like corn or Beanie Babies, is a commodity. When too much money is in the system, the cost of money – interest – becomes cheap. Ultimately, an overabundance of money devalues it: You need more money to buy the same items. In short, you have inflation. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Locked doors and a security system protect your equipment, inventory and payroll. But what protects your business's most valuable possessions? Intellectual property laws can protect your trade secrets, trademarks and product design, provided you take the proper steps.
Chicago attorney Kara E.F. Cenar of Welsh & Katz, an intellectual property firm, contends that businesses should start thinking about these issues earlier than most do. "Small businesses tend to delay securing intellectual property protection because of the expense," Cenar says. "They tend not to see the value of intellectual property until a competitor infringes." But a business that hasn't applied for copyrights or patents and actively defended them will likely have trouble making its case in court.
For instance, one of Welsh & Katz's clients is Ty Inc., maker of plush toys. Before launching the Beanie Baby line, Cenar explains, the owners brought in business and marketing plans to discuss intellectual property issues. The plan was for a limited number of toys in a variety of styles, and no advertising except word-of-mouth. Getting a patent on a plush toy might have been impossible and would have taken several years, too long for easily copied toys. VIEW FULL STORY HERE
Bay
View woman has collected thousands of McDonald's items
BAY VIEW -- When Myrna Kaufman gets that familiar, maniacal look in
her eye, her husband, Jerry, knows to stay out of her way.
She's like a tiger on the prowl, searching and stalking her prey. And if Myrna doesn't find what she's looking for, Jerry said, "You don't want to even live with her."
Jerry Kaufman knows his wife well, having been married nearly 45 years. There's one thing that she will never give up -- McDonald's Happy Meals. But it's not the meals she craves, it's the trinkets that come inside.
Collectors really went after Happy Meals when McDonald's released Teanie Beanies, smaller versions of Beanie Babies, in the late 1990s, Murcray said.
People would drive for miles to get the toys, she said. And Myrna was one of them.
Myrna's fascination with Happy Meal toys began when she was a bus driver for the Burlington-Edison School District in 1982 and started trading toys with kids. But when the Teanie Beanies came out, she really kicked into high gear. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

STILL BEANIE CRAZY IN ST. LOUIS
Debbie writes: "Hi Lisa, First I have to say, I love
reading your news letters. Thank you for the hard work. I sure do
enjoy them. Yes, some of my friends do not collect beanies as much as
they use to, but for me, I still collect. I love every minute of the
hunt. I love trying to stay on top of all the different variations. My
neighbor had a garage sale last week in which she sold her beanies. I
noticed kids about 8 to 10 years old were buying most of them
including the McDonald's sets.
I live in Missouri, but have a son who lives on Saltspring Island, BC.
He visits Victoria quit often and keeps an eye out for beanies for me.
I also have a beanie friend who lives in Vancouver doing the same.
So the beanie craze goes on here in St. Louis and we love it. Yours
Truly, Debbie S."

A
Hero’s Gratitude
Marine
returns from war to show gratitude to Thunderbolt students
Embedded in America’s collective memory will forever be the
image of U.S. Marines pulling down the giant metal statue of Saddam
Hussein.
Gunnery Sgt. Chuck Meals of Lake Havasu City, a platoon commander in
the 3rd Marine, 7th Battalion, was a member of the amphibious assault
division that helped bring down the statue and free Iraq. When the
effigy crashed to the ground, he was three miles away and heard about
the event through radio broadcasts.
“The letters really helped my platoon,” he said.
On April 29, Meals received the package in Iraq.
To offer his gratitude, Meals visited Kathrynn’s class Tuesday, and
for two hours he told the kids – now in the seventh grade — about
his experiences.
“Everything was greatly appreciated,” Meals said. “It was a
great thing you did.”
Meals distributed all of the letters and items among his troops, with
the exception of a Beanie Baby bear that he kept for himself. “I
know that sounds pretty corny, but it helped me a lot,” he said. VIEW

INTERESTING
Brenda
has noticed on the "past news" (http://www.ty.com/pastnews)
portion of the Ty.com website that the information regarding Issy's
retirement on 12-31-01 has now been removed as have the original
retirement date of 6-5-01 and the announcement of when Issy was
un-retired on 6-6-01. This is a bit odd isn't it? The retirement
message was on the "past news" page about a week ago. On my
Beanie Information pages this is the info on ISSY: Retired: 6-5-01 - un-retired:
6-6-01 - Retired again: 12-31-01
added note from HJ: "Hi Lisa-- I'm writing in response to your post on 8/6/03 about "Something Interesting" regarding Issy and how the original (12/31/01) retirement info has been removed from the Ty site's Past News page. That is incorrect. Its true that the 6/5/01 retirement announcement was removed within a day or so of its posting, but the 12/31/01 announcement is still there. It is a page that's part of the 1/2/02 retirement announcement. The first page shows three retired Beanie Boppers (1/2/02), the second page shows the Jingle Beanies retired (1/1/02), the third page shows two Beanie Kids retired (1/1/02), and the next page shows a list of the Beanie Babies that retired (12/31/01) including Issy. There are two more pages included in the same announcement showing lists of Buddies and Attic Treasures which also retired on 12/31/01. Just thought you might want to know. Happy hump day!"

Mendelson's
Liquidation growing with eBay
Sandy
Mendelson, president of the 43-year-old massive retail operation, is
peddling his merchandise to a worldwide market, via on-line auction
site eBay. Mendelson started his eBay division two years ago after
many of his customers, local tool and die shops, closed because of a
prolonged manufacturing drought.
"I have to look for another avenue to sell if I want to stay in
business, so eBay is the avenue we're looking to go," Mendelson
said from his ground-floor office.
The eBay division has 10 computer terminals and a dozen workers
dedicated to online sales, which account for 20 percent of Mendelson's
Liquidation's roughly $4.5 million in annual revenue. Mendelson's has
65 total employees.
But the 60-year-old businessman isn't finished.
In October, Mendelson will open Mendelson's eBay Store, a
5,000-square-foot business that will sell items on eBay for the
public.
EBay, which started as an auction site for folks selling Beanie
Babies, has evolved into the world's largest garage sale and currently
facilitates $65 million worth of sales every day. VIEW

Classic
toys remain ever popular in an era of fads
“Please.
Everyone I know has one.” How often does a parent hear that
statement while shopping in a toy store? It seems like every season a
new fad appears. Past trends include the Cabbage Patch doll, Pokeman,
Tickle Me Elmo and Yu-Gi-Oh.
“Naturally, the all-time fad has to be Beanie Babies,” said Ford.
The colorful under-stuffed plush bean bag toys, launched in 1993,
quickly became an obsession among adults and remained a hot commodity
for the next five years. VIEW

Catch-22 keeps engaged couple apart
Maria
Delarosa was in Hong Kong, working as a nanny to support her son back
in the Philippines.
Gregory Williams was in Sturtevant, serving time at the Racine Correctional Institution.
Both were looking for pen pals. Instead, they found love.
Their courtship, which began in 1996, started with letters and flourished with phone calls. Today, she wears a one-third carat diamond engagement ring and signs her notes "Your loving wife." But Williams and Delarosa aren't married yet. They haven't even met.
In late 1999, Williams proposed to Delarosa - through the mail. He hid the ring in a Beanie Baby so it wouldn't be stolen upon arrival in the Philippines.
Williams was released from prison in May 2001. He now runs his own heating and air conditioning business and sends Delarosa $300 to $500 per month to help support her and pay for her son's college education.
But their nuptial plans were snagged when the U.S. State Department denied her a fiancee visa. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Saturday, July 26.
While students still have an opportunity to continue reading for prizes until
school starts, the programs have concluded until fall programs start on Sept. 2.
Students can win prizes including Beanie Babies for number of minutes or books read. Mach said studies have shown that children who read over the summer don't lose any reading gains from the previous school year. VIEW FULL STORY HERE
