Where's the news?!

ADDRESSES BOUNCING
I have removed 14 subscribers from my mailing list because they had over 10 "hard bounces". "Topica disables a subscribers address due to a "hard bounce" — invalid or permanently unreachable". If you aren't going to be able to get to your email or you have changed your email address.. you may want to consider removing yourself from the list and subscribing with a current email address. I just wanted to let you know that if you aren't receiving your newsletters as you should be.. you may be one of the 14 that have been removed or one of numerous others that have 10 or fewer "hard bounces". I will remove those also after they reach 10.

Broncos' Brandon honors brother's memory
It began in Riverside, Calif, With a "Three Amigos" poster on a bedroom wall in the early 1980s and a love affair with John Elway. Hats, plaques and Beanie Babies steadily joined the collection.

When the Super Bowl rolled around and involved a certain Rocky Mountain NFL franchise, party platters were laid out at the Brandon household, the television volume was turned up and the nervous energy became palpable. Everyone knew which team they'd better root for, as passion was a requirement. Full Story:

Portsmouth Football
Judging by a recent list of prizes for the Portsmouth Football Club raffle, it would seem that Ty Europe are not just going to be sponsoring the shirts this year. It also raises the question once again, could we be seeing a special beanie given out at any of their matches this coming season? View Here:

'Sheraton 32 Day Beanie Plan' (Japan)
Kooler of 'Bean Book' has shared some information I thought rather interesting. During the World Cup event, the Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel conducted a 'Sheraton 32 Day Beanie Plan'. A 'Champion' Beanie was given to each visitor of the Hotel ... 32 days = 32 Beanies. Each day a 'Champion' bear of a participating country was waiting in the guest's room. Portugal was waiting for him on the day he stayed, complete with a mini-soccer ball, in a protective case. (Thanks for sharing, Kooler!) Click here to view the photos

New Beanies
From: Bean eWonderland
On the Ty Cyberboard Mags writes: "By now but I don't see any posts. I was there and saw them. Pegasus, a blue horse with multi colored iridenscent fabric wings like Magic. Blue about the color of blue America I'd say. Tooter a dinosaur. Looks like a baby one. Don't ask me what kind. Not a common one I'd know. It's molted beige fabric. Small horn on head and long tail. Zoom the turtle with multi colored checkerboard look shell. CUTE! August birthday bear. They had all 12 birthday bears and they are better then last years. The 3 Sherbet bears come in an assortment like Liberty and are aqua, yellow & pink. (they may spell it Sherbert, I don't remember) They are new faced with the slightly longer haired (?) fabric. Curly the buddy did not have the Curly beanie material and looks just like Almond buddy except for the color. Darling is the other new buddy & really cute. Plunkies are much cuter in person and Pluffies are soft and adorable. Ty booth was about the busiest booth I saw at the whole show. Am I the first to post this? Mags View Link:

Celebrity-signed Teenie Beanie Babies on eBay

From: Bean Watcher
The Ribbons of Hope Foundation is a nonprofit organization that sponsors celebrity auctions to raise charitable donations.  During the past two years, they have raised donations for charities through eBay auctions and programs.  Currently, they have 13 different eBay auctions for celebrity-signed Ty Teenie Beanie Babies (view list of auctions here).  The auctions all close on July 28, and include:

Rocket the Blue Jay signed by Alanis Morissette (view here)

Smoochy the Frog signed by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith (view here)

Strut the Rooster signed by Christina Applegate (view here)

Smoochy the Frog signed by Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Arnold Palmer (view here)

The Ribbons of Hope Foundation contacted each celebrity through their management agencies or their representatives and asked them to sign the auctioned items for fundraising purposes.  Please note that the foundation does not guarantee the authenticity of the signatures but it does believe that all signatures are authentic.  It does not believe an agency or representative would intentionally misrepresent its clients.  Thus, use proper discretion when bidding on any of these auctions.

Arrival of Teddy the 100th Year Anniversary Bear in the USA

From: Bean Watcher
There are at least two posts on the Ty Talk Cyberboard indicating that Teddy has arrived in local retail stores in the U.S.A. (view here for one post).  Coincidentally, both posts are from collectors in the state of Iowa.  Hopefully, other locations will receive this commemorative bear soon.  Thus, don’t pay high secondary market prices for this highly-sought style when you can buy him at retail prices.

Happy 100th Birthday, Teddy!
From: Ms. Janie
They are cuddled and caressed. Squeezed and pulled. Dressed up and dragged around. They listen well and never interrupt or judge, and they are experts at soaking up tears - which means they understand the true meaning of friendship. These little creatures and renowned for their calming, comforting qualities, making them essential for the very young. But many a college-bound student tucks a well-worn one inside their trunk, because a friend like this you just don't leave behind. They are, of course, Teddy Bears - probably the most adored toys of all time. Goebel is proud to honor these endearing bears as they celebrate a monumental century of success. http://www.mihummel.com/index_whatsnew.html

Shipments of Teddy to Asia Stopped?
From: Bean Watcher
A reader of The UnderGround Bean reports that Ty has stopped shipping Teddy the 100th Year Anniversary bear to Japan (view here).  Helping to support this story is a Ty Talk post stating that Ty Asia retailers in Singapore cannot order Teddy for the month of August (view here).  These reports are likely true, since retailers in the U.S. are complaining about having to attend a summer trade show to order this commemorative bear.

Keepsake branding can create devoted product following
Sometimes a brand becomes so meaningful to consumers that it creates an unusually strong connection. These consumers welcome the brand into their lives, so much so that they become advocates for the brand.

Collectibles. While many collectibles appeal to adults, you're probably familiar with this type of keepsake branding from your childhood or through children today. Ty Beanie Babies and Upper Deck Trading Cards are both designed with the purpose of becoming collectibles.

SOMEONE IN NEED
Julia shares the following:
I have a friend that is in need of help. She is having to sell her beanies to pay vet bills for she takes in strays and has them treated, and now she needs money to help pay for that. If you could take a look at her beanie auctions it would be appreciated very much. She e-mailed me and asked me to spread the word for her, as she is needing help selling her beanies. I wouldn't send this to you, but I think most of you collect beanies, or are pet lovers, one or the other.  She is a wonderful person, so if you don't mind please have a look. Thanks Julia

Deb's Note: Please remember, this is to be considered 'unconfirmed information' as it has not been announced by Ty. It should be treated as rumor only until an official Ty release. Guess it's another 'wait and see'. (We're looking forward to seeing Teddy though!)

M.C. Beanie Bears
From: Bean Watcher
At least three collectors report on the Ty Talk Cyberboard that they received M.C. Beanie bears that were not ordered (view here).  Another collector reported receiving a Black Ty parka that he did not order.  If these reports are true, then it would be interesting to know if these unordered bears are a special gift from Ty or if they were erroneously sent.  If you’re a Ty Master Card holder, keep your eyes open to see if one of these surprise shipments arrive in your mailbox!

Where is Ferny?

From: Bean Watcher
There are scattered reports that Ferny can no longer be found in retail stores in New Zealand.  This bear, part of the Asia-Pacific Flower set, is very hard to find, even on the secondary market.  Currently, there are no more than 26 auctions on eBay for this country exclusive.  Because of its scarcity, prices are quite high (currently, between $30 - $40 (US)).  An imminent retirement will increase its demand and cause its secondary market values to increase dramatically.

CONTEST TO END EARLY
I will be out of town from July 25th-28th. I will end the current Speckles-Classy Contest at midnight, July 24th and will announce the winner on July 25th. I will not be here to update the news during those few days either. I will make full updates when I arrive home.

EXCITING NEWS
I will be going to meet my older Sister for the first time. While I was raised as an only child all my life, I found out last October that my Mom had a baby before me when she was only 17. She gave her up for adoption and was able to find her about 5 months ago. This is a very exciting time for me as I am also an Aunt for the first time to 2 girls and 2 boys. I will be flying to Tampa Florida on the 25th to spend a weekend with my long lost Sister and my Mom. We will have so much fun. Actually I will get to meet Pam before we get to Tampa because the last leg of her trip will be from Atlanta and she and I will be on the same flight and sitting next to each other. This will give us just over an hour to get acquainted before Mom picks us up at the airport. I'm soooo excited. :o)

ASK TY
Q:
Why do you retire some Beanies faster than others? (submitted by sheenapuppy)
A: For most of the Beanie retirements there is actually a formula I try to follow. If you go back several years, you may be able to figure it out. On the other hand . . . . . . Sometimes I may just wake up in the morning and decide to retire one.

Yahoo Admits Changing E-Mail Text to Block Hackers
From: Ms. Janie
If you ever used Yahoo! mail to ask a potential employer to "evaluate" your resume, they might have concluded your grasp of the English language was insufficient for the job. Yahoo, Inc. confirmed on Wednesday that its e-mail software has automatically changed certain words -- including evaluate -- in a bid to prevent hackers from spreading viruses. Although the company declined to list the words its software had been changing, a report on the technology news Web site, News.com, reported that the program changes "mocha" to "espresso," and the phrase "eval" to "review." "Evaluate," then, becomes, "reviewuate," and that job application doesn't look so polished anymore. A spokeswoman for Yahoo said the word-changing program was just one of several practices the company takes to ensure the security of its e-mail. View story HERE

Teddy the 100th Anniversary Beanie Baby
Kendrick shares the following with Ms. Janie
Some details to share... The coin was secure to the knot of the ribbon with a thick thread instead of hanging over the neck with a string. The coin has a tiny little 'hook-able' on the top so the thick thread can go over it to secure it on the ribbon's knot. So, there'll be 2 version of the coin. One with hook, the other given out at the show won't have the 'hook-able'. Coin is 2.5cm & ribbon's width is 2cm. Teddy also have a tiny short tail like our Pot-belly bear do. Fur is curly at the end & shines under lightings! Teddy has a very sharp nose too. Overall, Teddy is a beautiful classic looking bear! I must get the Ty Classic version after I saw the Beanie Baby version! Enjoy the pictures! (^.^) Regards, Kenrick http://www.msjanie.com/temp/kenrick_teddy.html

NEW ATTICS
Marilyn shares the following with Ms. Janie
I stopped to pick up the new birthday attic today & found myself noticing Demetria, the angel with a flower petal collar & lavender print brocade wings. I even like that cute little fancy "package style" bow. I got her & also the pink Olympia with that super soft looking fur, but the brocade on her wings is only on the backside. I do wish Ty had put the petal collars on all 3 of the angel bears. I left the lavender angel on the shelf, at least for now. Here's a group picture of the 3 & will work on individual pictures later. "Surprise!" will match any gender or even unknown gender with generous use of pale green for the body, yellows, pinks & blues. Marilyn http://www.msjanie.com/temp/Marilyn_surprise.html

JUST WANTED TO SHARE ~ (Brandon is 3 years old)
I just wanted to share some cute things that Brandon has been saying lately.

Mark was shampooing the carpets this past weekend so he moved the TV in the living room and had it unplugged. Brandon walks over and tries to turn on the TV and noticed it won't work. I told him the TV was unplugged and he says, "Oh silly me". LOL

Saturday night we went to Buffalo's Cafe for dinner. The manager came over and started talking to Brandon. They both conversed back and forth for a bit and even shook hands. There were a few minutes of silence and all of a sudden Brandon says, "We have hair". LMBO Poor little guy couldn't think of anything else to say. The manager got a kick out of this and said, "it's good to have hair" and Brandon says, "yes it is". <grin> As you could imagine.. Mark and I were cracking up. Too cute!!

Mark was cooking breakfast this morning and after I changed Brandon's diaper he runs into the kitchen and says to Mark, "Hi daddy 'o". LOL

Just a few minutes ago Brandon came over with his pinwheel and tapped me on the shoulder with it and "dubbed me Queen Mom". <hehe>

This little boy is such a character and such a bright spot in our lives. I enjoy sharing with all of you and hope it makes you smile. :o) If you have children.. give them a huge hug and let them know how much they mean to you. It's times like this that make us all so thankful that we have such wonderful children in our lives. :o)

UPDATE: AUCTION FOR 252 NECTAR BEANIES
Marc shares the following:

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but I was wondering what happened to the ebay auction for 252 Nectar Beanie Babies. I just looked at the closed auction:

http://cgi.aol.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=1745918856

It ended on July 10 with a high bid of $9300.00 and the reserve STILL wasn't met. I wonder if they were going for $10,000.00 ? I would have liked to see a photo of the 21 dozen Nectar as some proof.

My comments: I can't believe the reserve wasn't met. $9,300 puts each Nectar at $36.90. I think that's a fair price for each Nectar.. but who in their right mind would pay more than that for an auction for that many Nectar Beanies unless they have money to throw away. If someone does purchase them for that amount.. I doubt they will be able to resell them all for more than $36 each so they will be on the losing end of that so called bargain.

Library kicks-off reading program
The Burley Library is offering much more than a chance to snuggle up with a good book this summer.

If the letter "a" follows description - authenticated, letter "t" means I bought it from a Ty dealer personally. Numbers in brackets show the generations. Buyer is to pay by certified funds or money order only. Funds will be verified before sending collection to buyer. Buyer must pay within 10 days of auction close, no exceptions. Buyer will pay for shipping and insurance, which will be figured at auction close. There will be a minimum of 12 boxes sent. International buyers will pay more for shipping and insurance. I do subscribe to the bad bidder program on Ebay and will use it if necessary. The list is long, but do enjoy looking... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=1747691074

'Buddies' to aid children in distress
From: Bean eWonderland
Children whose young lives are torn apart by fire, abuse or the sudden death of a parent have some comfort coming their way. The children's pastor at Lifepoint Community Church in DeLand came up with the idea of giving stuffed animals to the tiny tots in distress, and went on to collect about 400 "beanie buddies" that have been donated to the Sheriff's Office.

On Tuesday, children's pastor Terry Cooper and two girls in his youth group delivered the load of little stuffed animals to Sheriff Ben Johnson, and the sheriff passed them on to his deputies. The colorful beanie buddies are now sitting in deputies' cars, waiting to help each time deputies are involved in a situation with a child, according to sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson. 3 NEW TY TRADEMARKS
Sly shares the following with Ms. Janie
Hi Ms. Janie!! I discovered another new Ty trademark application this morning. Actually 3 new ones but all for the same product. On June 4,2002 Ty applied to register 3 different trademarks on the word "Tyhair". There is 3 different Goods and services listed in each of the 3 trademark applications. The goods and services listed are 1-Plush toys 2-Threads for textile use-namely fabrics 3-Synthetic Fabric for Textile use Looks like Ty is covering all the bases on this new fabric/trademarks and looking to protect their rights to it as much as possible. This is the 1st tyme Ty has gone to this far and applied 3 times to protect a new product and trademark.

SOMETHING TO SHARE
HJ shares the following:
"Hello all-- This isn't something I check on a regular basis, but this morning when I opened the Ty home page, I actually read the "QUOTE OF THE DAY" and I must say, that as a payroll processor (for a school district no less), I was appalled and TOTALLY amused by what I read. BEARS & BEANS FORUM
Daphne shares the following about the new forum:
"It’s a fan site for collectors of any type of bears and beanbag toys.  It’s an independent site and is not linked to any other website/manufacturer/publication/whatever

There are two opening competitions up there in the forum now: you can have the chance to win a Chubbley Bears retailer pin and a Wales bear.  We hope to have some brand new Half Sovereign Chubbley Cubs, the new miniatures, up there for grabs by the weekend too ... and, possibly, some other surprises.  There’s also a trading area – for members only – and further pages are being developed."

My comments: This is a great forum. I'm easy to find.. my ID is PlanetBeans

NOT BEANIE RELATED BUT HAD TO ASK
Has anyone been having problems with Microsoft Outlook Express? I have been having a great deal of problem with mine since Monday night. Whenever I open my email and attempt to reply to anything I receive the following error message: "Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Well it certainly is an inconvenience. LOL I have to copy and paste my emails into Microsoft Word so I can read them and type up a reply before it quickly shuts down. I have the option of sending an error report each time which I do.. but it's still happening. :o( Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :o)

FOR THOSE UPSET ABOUT TY STORE BEANIE KIDS ~ THIS SAYS IT ALL
Andree shares the following with Ms. Janie:
Hi Ms. Janie! Well, I guess these folks either didn't get the same screen as a friend did, or they didn't read the information on the Ty Store page regarding the Patriotic Kids. Katie had reported the following on another message board: "In case anyone was wondering, if you order the Stars and Stripes Beanie Kid from the Ty Store, you will get the Beanie Kid Princess, and if you order the Uncle Sam Beanie Kid from the Ty Store you will get Buzz. I found out by putting a 1 of each in the quantity boxes in the Ty Store ordering page then I went to Order Now. Once I got to the page that reviews your order it lists these 2 Kids. Once you get in this page you can cancel out of it without having to enter any ordering info or make any kind of purchase. Since I now have the outfits and I already have those 2 Kids I already have everything I need."I believe these two Beanie Kids were offered with the outfits on the Ty Store to make more Beanie Kids available to the public. As a courtesy to collectors of Ty products. Some stores don't CARRY Beanie Kids or the Ty Gear to go with the Kids. How is anyone supposed to find those items if they aren't available. By offering the items at the Ty Store, they become available to everyone with access to Ty .com. And I think it's great! Also, the outfits WERE introduced as new Ty Gear, right on the Ty page when other new introductions were posted. The outfits were labeled as "Stars and Stripes" and "Uncle Sam." The Kids could have been identified by looking at the listing of Kids on Ty.com. I think the confusion arose from Ty putting the words Exclusive on the offer. We collectors have come to associate "exclusive" with something only being available in or at one place. Only one place. So folks eagerly ordered the "exclusive" thinking it would be only available at the Ty Store. In this case, it was an exclusive offer from the Ty Store. They would sell the Beanie Kids and the two cute outfits ONLINE. Not that they weren't available elsewhere, but that it might be more convenient to buy online. And it apparently DID tell the folks EXACTLY what they were getting on the order page, as Katie mentions. So, in this case, it's not Ty's fault if folks didn't read through the order to see what they were getting. Or if they didn't know that the items were offered at SOME retailers individually. Andree

My comments: I didn't order these Beanie Kids because I didn't believe they were exclusive. I'm sorry people were disappointed about their orders. For those of you that weren't able to find these Beanie Kids or the "Uncle Sam" or "Stars & Stripes" Ty Gear.. I know you were happy. :o)

eBay Pays up for new Pal
From: Bean eWonderland
Auction giant eBay is acquiring online payments company PayPal in a deal valued at $1.5bn, the companies said on Monday. PayPal will continue to offer its service as an independent brand, eBay said. PayPal, which went public earlier this year, allows consumers to make and accept payments over the Internet without using a credit card. The bulk of its business comes from eBay auctions. EBay offers a competing service, eBay Payments by Billpoint, which will be phased out after the deal closes.

Upscale tenants sought for area
From: Bean eWonderland
Some of the largest floor space available on Ellicott City's Main Street is going to an antiques dealer and an interior designer, two businesses that observers say will distinguish Main Street and further establish it as a location for offices as well as retail stores. Lisa DeVries of Waverly Real Estate, who leased both spaces, said she believes those stores reflect a change in the image of Main Street."I think we're seeing a shift from some of the Beanie Baby dealers to some retail and office users that would create a draw to Ellicott City," she said. Susan points out an auction for 21 dozen Nectar Beanie Babies. The reserve hasn't been met yet with 50 bids and a price of $8,699.99. That's over $34 for each Nectar. Oddity Beanie Babies
From: Bean eWonderland
One of the most common questions received on a regular basis is regarding a valuation on an 'Oddity' beanie baby. Maybe it is a reader who has a Maple with the flag missing or even a Dad-e bear with the word 'Love' on both feet. This subject is a very hard one to answer and it all depends on who out there is willing to pay the top price for the oddity that you may have. On browsing around for information on the subject I found an interesting article on the Smart Collecting web site. Iti s entitled, 'How To Get The Most For Your Beanie Oddity' and can be viewed by Clicking Here:

Care Bears Return
From: Beanieholics
(I had to post this info as my daughter has a great collection of the original Care Bears and although she's 13 now I believe this would interest her as well)
It's hard to believe that it was 1982 when the Care Bears were first introduced. This week we ran across plush versions of these loveable bears and found they are made to commemorate the Care Bear's 20-year anniversary. These are available in various sizes, a Beanie size and a Buddy size and also miniatures. Look for the 1985 Care Bears movie to be released on DVD on August 6th. The site Playthings Past shows some of the Care Bear items being released. Click Here For More

Other News - 81-year-old widow takes on Disney over Winnie the Pooh
From: Bean eWonderland
Who owns the honey pot? An 81-year-old widow is taking on Disney in a fight over Winnie the Pooh and a $1-billion-a-year empire. Once upon a time--well, actually 78 years ago--a British playwright named Alan Alexander Milne scribbled some lighthearted verses about a boy and his constant companion, a dimwitted bear who couldn't get enough honey.

Pooh has become a $1 billion-a-year industry for Walt Disney Co., which acquired rights to the Milne characters in 1961. Disney has put Pooh and his forest friends in movies and computer software, on its ABC television network and on videotapes and DVDs. There's Pooh fruit juice and Tigger telephones. Pooh Beanie Babies dressed in satiny feng shui robes and leather-like black biker jackets. Piglet cookie jars. Pooh chopsticks. A toaster that plays a Pooh jingle while toasting bread in a pattern that resembles the bear's face.

At Tokyo Disneyland, visitors wait two hours to ride Pooh's Honey Hunt--the park's most popular attraction.

Last year, Disney paid $352 million to buy the remaining Pooh rights from various Milne heirs in England. Yet there remains one threat to the entertainment giant's Pooh empire. Her name is Shirley Slesinger Lasswell.

Lasswell is an 81-year-old widow who lives in Beverly Hills and gets around in a chauffeured silver Mercedes with a 3-foot Pooh doll buckled in beside her. Lasswell and her daughter inherited merchandising rights to Milne's characters half a century ago from Lasswell's first husband, a literary agent.

In 1961, Lasswell turned those rights over to Disney for a share of the merchandising revenue. Since then, she and her daughter, Patricia Slesinger, have collected $66 million in Pooh riches. But they are unhappy. They contend that Disney has cheated them out of at least $200 million in royalties and are asking a court to terminate their Disney contract so they can shop their Pooh rights to other companies. MasterCard Promotion Extended (Again)
From: Beanieholics
This morning (yesterday) we reported on the expiration of the Ty MasterCard MC Beanie program. On the Ty site it listed June 30, 2002 as the final day of the promotion. That has now been changed. A reader writes:

The second statement under Conditions states that the exclusive Beanie Baby is available for new accounts until December 31, 2002 and can be replaced with an item of equal or greater value at any time.

When I called MBNA last week to ask about another MC Beanie, the rep said he thinks they might be changing out to a new exclusive Beanie Baby, but this is just hearsay.

I sure hope it's true! ~Jessica

From: Bean eWonderland
Thank you to Pamela and Anne who both share some interesting auctions finds. The first is for 252 Nectar beanie babies, if these are genuine it is no wonder that they were so hard to find View Here: A set 'Buy it Now' price of $1199.00 would see you as the new owner of an authenticated Billionaire Bear 5 View Here: Finally the same Billionaire Bear seller has a second one available, slightly more in price at $1499.00 View Here: The lower priced Billionaire Bear also has a lower number, the description states that it is numbered 5. The higher priced one states that it has a number lower than 100. My guess is that the seller has these prices the wrong way round.
