Second Annual Collectibles Convention Update
September 1 - 3, 2000 at Sun Spree Resort, Scottsdale, Arizona
This convention is coming fast! It seems like just yesterday when we started to plan this event. Maralou Burnham, Lori Greenbeck and Sue Chatterjee have been working very hard to pull together this year's convention. They have signed on three of the most well known bear artist's: Sally Winey, Nola Hart and Ruth Fraser. For those attending make sure you sign-up soon for Sally's bear making class. Seats are very limited. Sal of Sal's Attic is bringing her extensive Attic Collection (I hear she owns Woolie Brown!) to share at Saturday's sale. By the way, tables are still available for Saturday's sale, but they are very limited. Contact Lori at Hnlmedical@aol.com for more information. Sue Chatterjee is collecting auction donations. All proceeds go to Good Bears of the World. I hear she is accepting most anything she can get. Her email address is OneReader@aol.com. Sky's the Limit is the bear that Sally Winey has designed for this convention. Originally this was going to be a limited edition of 100. To me this seemed like a large edition for such a special bear. Since I commissioned the making of this bear, I have decided to make Sky a limited edition of only 25. For those that have your bears, I will be sending you new Certificates of Authenticity. For those that don't, I only have 5 left in this edition. Sky is a 10" jointed, string mohair bear, hand painted to look like the clouds in the sky. Each bear is $150. and $20. from each bear will be given to Good Bears of the World, the official charity of the Second Annual Collectibles Convention. It seems to be working just find today. I've looked around and and noticed some auctions already heating up in price. There are a few autographed Ariel Beanies on auction. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is privileged to present this special Ariel Beanie Baby signed by Brook Shields, Harrison Ford, Troy Aikman. With so many new releases set to hit the stores, (which include Libearty Buddies Lefty and Righty combinations) it is a fairly safe bet that at least one of these will be a USA Country exclusive. I would not be surprised to see the current USA Bear retired very shortly and at an average price of $14.00 now could be the time to get a few. They could become great bargaining tools with Canada and Europe when they receive their new Country exclusives. The Meta Exchange shows a slight lack of availability at present with over 1200 wanted and a little under 300 for sale. Ty® Unveils New Styles at Dallas Show

Dallas -- Ty Inc.® released new styles of its various lines today (June 24) at a show at the Dallas World Trade Center. Due to a concern about the Web cam at the Denver Show, Ty has yet to reveal the new designs at the show. Some limited information about the new styles has been revealed, although Ty has yet to release information on all 50 new designs.

Although Ty will not officially release specific information about the new styles, several have been confirmed:

FALL TEENIE BEANIES?!

Here's proof that there will be a fall Teenie Beanie promotion. Click here to see a copy of the licensing agreement between McDonalds and Ty. The picture takes awhile to load. The arrows on the picture point to the underlined sentences that refer to the fall Teenie beanie promotion. The agreement basically states the rules that McDonalds and Ty agree to. For example, McDonalds cannot sell them for more than $2.49 and they can't release certain teenies before their due dates and Ty agrees to buy a percentage of the Teenies back if they are not all sold. But their will definitely be a fall promotion. We have been told that they will include Lefty, Righty and Libearty and probably some new election bears to coordinate with the fall election.

New Ty Releases Today

This morning Ty will unveil 50 new designs at the Dallas Gift Show. Security will be tight and it is not known when news might leak as to what Ty has to offer collectors. Will the new releases even have hang tags so they can be identified? (They didn't earlier this year in New York.) We will no doubt learn today of new Beanie Babies and Beanie Buddies but after that it's anyone's guess as to what Ty has up his sleeve. Kids, Attics, Plush or something completely different? We'll see!

Ty has introduced NOTHING so far. But I do know that Ty has ordered that the Trade Center must turn off their web cam which would NORMALLY play continuous footage of the show.

Sly shares with Ms. Janie an auction he found for the rumored Sakura Buddy. You can view the auction HERE. I would caution anyone to buy from a presell auction when the Sakura Buddy is just a rumor. No hard evidence to prove it's existence as of yet. Also if you remember a website that was posted on the news page not so long ago about a site telling people how to make a Sakura Buddy. The picture to the left was borrowed from the site that teaches you how to make your Halo or Valentino Buddies into Sakura. You can view this site and info HERE. It looks like there are only 46 for sale at MetaExchange and 120 are still wanted. The price has come down a bit from it's high yesterday of over $50!! Keep your eyes on this little graphic to see the current price. If you are able, it might be wise to invest in this one now before the price goes again.

Are Teenie Beanie Babies losing their McCitement?

Analyst Questions McDonald's Beanie Babies' Popularity Are Teenie Beanie Babies losing their McCitement? This is the fourth year in which McDonald's Corp. (MCD) has wooed customers to restaurants with a unique series of miniature Beanie Babies plush toys. They come free with kids' Happy Meals and can be purchased with other menu items. A spokesman for McDonald's told Dow Jones Newswires that this year's Teenie Beanie Babies promomotion is "doing pretty well" but declined to disclose specific sales results. However, one Wall Street observer, restaurant analyst Stacy Jamar at Banc of America Securities LLC, suspects the bloom is off. "An early read ... indicates Beanie Babies having fallen to as little as 50% of the draw of prior years," she advised clients in a research note. She didn't elaborate on how many markets she had surveyed. Jamar said that "while this sales level allows for a very strong Happy Meal promotion, we fear it may fall short of last year's tough sales comparison when the stuffed creatures were the 'Must Have' du jour. http://news.excite.com/news/dj/000620/20000620-006928

Although I cannot confirm this, we have received some information stating that one of Ty's new releases will be a UK exclusive Beanie Baby and that there will be a new USA exclusive Buddy arriving as well.

TEENIE POPULARITY
I've seen many people post in the Planet Beans Yahoo! Club http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/planetbeans about their
Teenie luck. Some people have been able to get their teenies without any problem due to short lines. Are there more teenies this year or less of a demand?! I've seen a few people post that they don't intend on buying them this year because there are just too many. They may pick up a few but have no intentions of trying to complete the full set. I took my kids to McDonald's and purchased a Happy Meal for my daughter today.. they were out of the Teenie Happy Meal bags so they were putting the meals in Dinosaur bags. LOL It appears the Happy Meals are selling like hot cakes around here and they are already on the Under the Sea group. I talked to the manager of another store and she told me that the Superstars are selling out pretty quick and seem to be requested more than the regular Teenies. She was on her 2nd box of the International Bears and her 3rd box of the Dinos. They were also only a few bags away from being completely out of the Happy Meal bags. When I was in Georgia the day the promotion started and the day after, I was amazed at how short the lines were. Even at lunch time on McHappy Day they had so many Millenniums left that the manager was surprised at the poor turnout for them. The newspaper in Atlanta ran an ad for McHappy Day stating there were ONLY 200 Millenniums per store and they expected a sell-out in a couple of hours. That's not what I found. I hope everyone is getting the teenies they want or need. They are starting to move fast in some places.

I just wanted to get a quick note out to you about the newest happenings on Okinawa, Japan. Saturday we were finally graced with Ty's 2000 Beanies! I saw Morrie, Swampy, Halo II, Beginning Bear, Grace, Rufus, Scurry, Sarge, Frigid, and Aurora. I'm sure it won't be too long before the rest appear and maybe we'll even get the 2000 Buddies soon. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Ty, Inc. for realizing that just maybe they'd have a chance at making a market in Japan if they shipped the new products instead of just the old ones. There were still plenty of older retired styles shipped too but being able to buy some newbies instead of drooling over their internet pictures sure did make our day. I did read a post on Ty's Cyberboard where the poster stated she was going to be receiving a Sakura Buddy in the mail this week. I have not heard anything about a Sakura Buddy from any of our retailers (after the huge Sakura Beanie sweep, a lot of us got to really know the store owners) so we will still have to wait to find out if this rumor is yet to come true. After much confusion, massive chaos and just plain uncertainty we now know what these are ... the pics of the POSSIBLE new beans listed below that we posted late last night? They are not, I repeat, they are NOT real ... they were created by an ingenious and talented designer last summer - he claims his photo's in the email below:

Hello. I am the author of the many "Rumored" Beanie pictures and names included on your site (Vincent the bear, Melody the bear, Brooklyn the pigeon etc) and just wish to clear it up. These were created using Photoshop and pictures of authentic Beanies back in the Summer of 1999. they were posted to the AOL discussion board as something fun since Ty's official release at that point was going very slowly and wasn't particularly interesting. the background in these pictures is the one Ty used for the Summer 99 releases. I simply replaced Ty's with my own The folks who regularly read the board loved them and I often got requests to repost the pictures. AOL recently opened an area which allowed users to post pictures . So I re-uploaded them there so people could access them whenever they wanted. All of the Beanies on the "list" have corresponding pictures. They were never designed to deceive anyone . oddly whoever sent the list included "Grapey the bitter bear" .. a joke in response to the "sour grapes" reaction many collectors on the discussion board regarding Ty's "Billionaire bear" announcement.

Yavett's comments: Thanks for coming forward and claiming these and setting the record straight - now you have it folks, these are man-made and not Ty-made! Those of you that asked, we changed our logo and site look before we ever knew about the pics of "Vincent", so it was totally co-incidental.

Teenies in Georgia
While I was in Georgia house hunting this past week we drove by many McDonalds. I can honestly tell you from all appearances the drive-thrus were clear and there weren't many cars in the parking lots. Does this mean people are still sick of Happy Meals or are they just tired of having to spend so much money to get a complete set of Teenies?! I have 3 children and it would cost me a small fortune to purchase ALL 29 Teenies. We are going to stick with the 18 teenies and maybe a promo or two. We did manage to get the Millennium on McHappy Day. I was surprised to see they still had BOXES of Millenniums available so close to lunch time. It was rumored that McDonalds was expecting a sell out within hours of opening their doors on June 13th. The newspaper said each store only had 200 to sell.

People have been stealing the popular plush toys from gift stores and selling them to others who hawk them at local flea markets. McDonald's Suit Over `Big Kid's Meal' Name Thrown Out By Judge

Detroit, June 15 (Bloomberg) -- Diageo Plc's Burger King Corp. persuaded a federal judge to throw out rival McDonald's Corp.'s suit seeking to bar the No. 2 hamburger chain from using the name ``Big Kid's Meal'' for its larger-sized portions aimed at older children.
U.S. District Judge John Corbett O'Meara in Detroit granted Burger King's request to dismiss McDonald's suit Tuesday, after concluding the world's largest fast-food chain didn't have trademark rights to the Big Kid's Meal name. Burger King already calls its meals for younger children ``Kid's Meals.''
Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald's, which once used the name to sell burgers and fries to young adults in the Detroit area, argued that Burger King's use of the moniker for larger- portion children's meals, would confuse consumers.
McDonald's couldn't produce enough evidence showing the Big Kid's Meal name had become associated with its fast-food fare in ``the public mind,'' O'Meara said in a seven-page decision.

Teenie Beanies Begin Today: Today was the first day of the annual McDonald's Teenie Beanie promotion. People who got to their local McDonald's early today were allowed to purchase a special edition Millennium Teenie that was only going to be available on the first day. I'm not sure what other areas have been like, but here in Tennessee, there were virtually no lines at the McDonald's here locally. (no more than an average day) I have a feeling that the Millennium Teenies will still be available for a few days. McDonalds is reporting that on June 27, 2000, there will be two other "secret teenies" announced. "Come Back Here Tuesday, June 27th To See The Two Secret Teenie Beanie Babies!!"

Terminator Terminated? According to the rules for the big contest "The Terminator" put on by UnderGround Bean and Beanie Wonderland, anyone caught posting questions from the contest on any public forum will cause everyone who had not sent in their answers yet to be disqualified. Well on the first day of the big contest, there was a cheater spotted on the Ty Cyberboard asking for help with today's question. Because of this, 117 people have been terminated because they didn't get their answers sent in before the cheater struck. Both Underground Bean and Beanie Wonderland appear to be at a loss as to what to do about the situation because they apparently received emails stating that this was a plot to eliminate as much of the competition as possible by having one person send in the correct answer and the other person posting a message on a public forum to cause the rest of the players to be terminated. The contest has been halted for the time being until they can decide on a resolution. Read about it at Underground Bean.

Yavett's comments: The sender of this email is listed as "W. Karvouniaris" which is the person that people were supposed to be sending prize donations to for the Toys in the Attic/BBNDesign contest in which BBNDesign had to pull out because it was suspected that Toys in the Attic was scamming the contestants. So please be careful when donating a prize to a contest - make sure that you know the webmaster and know the site.

My comments: Some of you may already know that I was one of the two people on the losing end of the Bongo's Beanie Newsflash Ty-Dyed Digger Buddy contest. There were only two contestants left, myself and bnehunter. Chris of BBN decided it was in the best interest of everyone to cancel the contest and delete the Toys in the Attic website. He did this because he believed the person (Tom) that was in charge of the contest and supposedly had the prizes to award the two winners, had nothing to give. It turns out that Tom of Toys in the Attic probably didn't have the prizes. He (Tom) was trying to be unfair to the contestants and had asked Chris to post an 11th question when the rules clearly stated there were to be only 10 questions to determine the winner. Nobody will be receiving prizes.. the contest won't even be completed. We were due to answer the 10th and final question when this all took place. I'm still very upset and angry at the amount of time that I, myself, spent in researching the very difficult questions. Time that would have been better spent with my 3 children and husband. I also feel awful for how Chris and bnehunter must be feeling. If you have had dealings with Tom (beanie_folk2000@yahoo.com) please email me about them. I'm just curious at this point. Beware of this person.. in fact beware of anyone you aren't familiar with. Donate to those site that you are familiar with or are able to find information about past contest and winners or people that have dealt with a particular site with positive results. Chris really tried to help resolve the differences and it's appreciated. I don't want him to look like the "bad guy" because he's not.

Sally has signed a contract with Hobby House Press to do a book called "Rainbow Bears to Make and Collect" This book will have three patterns and the "History of Winey Bears". It will include many pictures of her very first bears and how they have evolved and helpful information on where to get the supplies to make your own bears. Due to be released in January 2001. Yes, this sounds familiar doesn't it? The first book was cancelled after the first publishing company was sold. This is a larger, well known publishing house and Sally feels confident that this one will become a reality.
