First-graders collect Beanie Babies for babies at Strong
(March 30, 2007) — GATES — First-graders at Washington Irving Elementary School in Gates collected 226 lightly used and new Beanie Babies and donated them to the Strong Memorial Hospital Neonatal Unit.

They will be used to position preemie babies in their Isolettes or cribs. The idea began at Elim Gospel Church in Lima, where Sharon Oppedisano attends. Oppedisano, a Washington Irving first-grade teacher, heard a church presentation from a Strong Hospital nurse.

"She said the wing doesn't always have the basic needs such as rocking chairs and it tugged at my heart," she said. "I talked to the nurse and she suggested the Beanie Babies and teddy bears would be a great way to help. Then I thought this would be something that first-graders would just love."

She teamed with another first-grade teacher, Shannon Parmele, who brought her school kids into the project. The school sent out flyers and also hung some outside the first-grade doors.

"I was just so surprised and overwhelmed at how generous everybody was," said Oppedisano. "One mother brought in a whole bag of new Beanie Babies. And some of our kids who have been to the Strong Hospital felt a connection and were very excited to do something for the babies."

The collection lasted three weeks and the Beanie Babies were sent to the hospital last month. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070330/NEWS05/703280324/1002/NEWS

Michael Dell's firm purchases Hawaii resort
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) _ The 82-acre Kona Village Resort has been sold to a joint venture that includes technology mogul Michael Dell's private investment firm M-S-D Capital.

The resort is near the 825-acre Hualalai Resort, which was purchased by the same group in June 2006. Kona Village was sold by Ty Warner Hotels and Resorts, which will retain an interest in the property.

Terms were not disclosed.

Ulrich Krauer, general manager of property, said Kona Village's rich heritage will be preserved and enhanced.

The company says the resort will be refurbished and all employees have been retained by the new owners.

The Kona Village Resort, located on the Big Island's Kohala Coast, opened in 1965 and features lagoons, white- and black-sand beaches, the Kahuwai Bay marine preserve and a centuries-old petroglyph field of ancient markings. http://www.kpua.net/news.php?id=11126

Unique Collaboration
-- The Hotel Puerta America is an industry—and historical—first: Twenty-three internationally renowned architects and designers from 19 firms spanning all disciplines (some are even hotel neophytes) collaborated to create the 342-room, 5-Star hotel in Madrid. From Jean Nouvel to Zaha Hadid to Christian Liaigre, the list reads as an industry who's who. But even more unique is the fact that owner Silken Hotels gave each architect/designer free creative rein on his/her assigned floor or public space (each floor is outfitted by a different designer). The result is a luxurious multicultural experience that, according to Silken president Antón Iraculis, "pays homage to the world of art, architecture, and design."

Change of Seasons

What would lure a Pritzker Prize-winner out of retirement? A second chance at the Four Seasons Hotel New York's two presidential suites.

The job is a labor of love for I.M. Pei, the hotel's original architect. When the hotel first opened in 1993, the then-owners were unwilling, for economic reasons, to implement his original scheme—suites inspired by the city's most stunning vistas. But current owner Ty Warner, of Ty Warner Hotels and Resorts and Beanie Baby dolls fortune, gave Pei free reign to design the exterior of the suites, which are 600 feet above street level on the 51st floor of the hotel.

Pei positioned balconies, one outside of each suite, on the corners of the hotel's building to afford diagonal views of the city; one suite now overlooks Central Park and the Hudson and East Rivers, while the other looks south to the Chrysler and Empire State buildings, and its shower offers a view of the Statue of Liberty. Pei also replaced the hotel's conventional windows with floor-to-ceiling bay windows, the center pane an uninterrupted expanse of 10-foot-high glass.

New York City-based designer Peter Marino, whose clientele includes such luminaries as Giorgio Armani and Bernard Arnault, handled the suites' décor, which focuses on custom pieces for a residential feel. "[Warner] didn't want to see anything in them he might see somewhere else," Marino says. "Everything was to be custom made from the most lavish materials I could find." Highlights include oversized leather club chairs; walls with embossed leather panels; a hearth of Chios marble streaked in shades of toffee and magenta; ebonized wood flooring; and a bathroom that seems to have been carved from a solid slab of ginger onyx marble.

What price for such luxury? A mere $15,000 per night, reportedly the most expensive room rate in the country. http://www.hdmag.com/hospitalitydesign/search/article_display.jsp?schema=&vnu_content_id=1001015719&&&&&&&&&imw=Y

Indian Wells: Federer Pays a "Bear"-y Important Visit
Roger Federer's campaign at the 2007 Pacific Life Open may have been cut unexpectedly short, but tennis' top ambassador made sure his stay in Indian Wells included a visit with the tournament's ball kids.
Following his second round doubles match Tuesday, which he and compatriot Yves Allegro narrowly lost in the Match Tie-break, the ATP World No. 1 and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador greeted the ball kids who had purchased Feder-bear Beanie Babies.

Federer, who was a ball kid at his hometown tournament in Basel, posed for pictures and collected the more than eighty Feder-bears to take back to his hotel room, promising the ball kids he would return all of them with his autograph.

The Feder-bear Beanie Baby® is a plush take-home likeness of the Swiss, aimed at raising funds for Assisting Children Everywhere Program (ACE), the global partnership between the ATP and UNICEF whose objective is to ensure the health, education and protection of children around the world.

The Feder-bear has been in hot demand at the year's first ATP Masters Series event, with more than 1500 purchased. Since going on sale on the official Ty Web site last December, tens of thousands have shipped to destinations worldwide. http://www.tennisnews.com/exclusive.php?pID=18318

Would you want to see beanies go back to the "good ole days?"

Beanies R Best writes: I remember when beanies were hot, that I had to wait in long lines to get common beanies, pay high prices for them, call and call and call, drive miles to get a bear, and sometimes, get ripped off when I paid by check.

World Has More Billionaires Than Ever Before
There's almost a thousand of them and they all have one trait in common you'll never share - they're unbelievably, unfathomably wealthy.

The annual Forbes list of the world's richest people is out and as usual Microsoft mogul Bill Gates is at number one. His personal fortune is estimated to be worth $56 billion - an increase of $6 billion from last year.

Fellow philanthropist and investor Warren Buffett had to settle for silver, and he can afford it. He's now valued at $52 billion, a $10 billion boost.

No one's surprised about the extensive wealth of either man, who are the Beatles of billionaires - always at the top of the charts.

But what's surprising is how the list has grown. There are now 946 billionaires in the world, the highest number in history. Which would seem to prove that old adage about the rich getting richer.

Their combined wealth is an unimaginable number that would easily settle the national debt of most countries. All tolled, they're worth $3.5 trillion.

But not everyone got there that way. Some just had a good idea, like George Lucas, who's simply listed as "Star Wars" on the 2007 entry.

You already know about J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter-inspired fortune.

But our favourite has to be 177th place Ty Warner, who's worth $4.5 billion. Where did he get it all? The Forbes list has just two words beside his name - "Beanie Babies." http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_8605.aspx
