TY EUROPE STAND A SELL OUT
From: Beanieholics (http://www.randyandtheresa.com/)
Season ticket sales continue to be brisk for the Ty UK sponsored team called the Portsmouth Football Club or Pompey, as referred to by fans. The team plays at Fratton Park and the section of the stadium there dubbed the 'Ty Europe Stand' is now sold out for the remainder of the season. According to the team's official website, season ticket mania is continuing to grow on a daily basis and the club has now sold around 14,300 permanent seats. A spokesman is quoted as saying: "With the Ty Europe end now a complete sell out and the South Stand upper going the same way we really are getting to a point where it is going to become extremely tight to buy on a match to match basis." We doubt we will ever travel to the UK to visit Fratton Park, but through the Internet it is possible to take a virtual tour of the stadium, from the playing field to the dressing rooms. CELEBRITY-SIGNED CHUBBLEY BEARS
Sue Own shares the following:
Hi, I have several interesting charity auctions starting at 20.00 GMT on eBay on Monday 2nd December. They are the first ever celebrity-signed Chubbley Bears to go on auction, and I hope that they will not be the last!

The auctions are to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a charity very close to my heart and that of many people. All of my fundraising campaigns with Chubbley Bears use the word 'CHERISH' in the title, which stands for:

Creating Hope Enabling Research Informing Supporting Helping

Most of the celebrities are British and therefore not well-known by collectors in other countries, but there are some who may be familiar. Here is a link to a page that has links to more information on the celebrities featured on this and future auctions:

http://www.geocities.com/sue_owenuk/Current_projects.html

There is one special item listed that will be of great interest to ALL Chubbley collectors everywhere. It is quite unique in that it is a Chubbley Cub that cannot be bought in any shop; it was produced exclusively for the UK monthly 'Bean Bag Magazine' and has been signed by the creators of Chubbley Bears, Charles Rogers and Darren Barker, and by the editor of Bean Bag Magazine, Daphne Roberts. All three people have been unstinting in their help and generosity towards my fundraising for Cancer Research UK.

The auction links are listed below, although they cannot be bid on until the start time. I would very much appreciate any publicity that you are able to give these, in order to get as much interest, and of course bids, as possible.

Many thanks.

Sue Owen  http://www.geocities.com/sue_owenuk/

<<<since these auctions haven't started yet, I will give you a reminder on Monday along with the links. I'm just trying to get the interest of my readers and let you know what's coming up so you can get those bidding fingers in shape and the wallets ready to give. I hope you will be looking forward to these auctions as I am.>>>

EBay anticipates a happy holiday with record sales
SAN JOSE, Calif. · While traditional brick-and-mortar retailers might fear an economic Grinch could dampen holiday sales this year, Silicon Valley's own version of Santa Claus expects to be ho-ho-hoing all the way to the bank.

Online auction giant eBay Inc. is bracing for record sales of everything from the hot new Barbie-as-Rapunzel doll to unusual gifts for former dot-commers who used to have everything.

In fact, the company that bills itself as the world's largest virtual marketplace is beginning to look a lot more like its main street and shopping mall competitors, with holiday trappings like glitzy advertising and merchants who offer gift wrapping.

The fifth-most-frequently visited site behind AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo and Google, eBay expects to facilitate $10 billion worth of merchandise sales in 2002, more than Saks Fifth Avenue and several other large national chains.

A good deal of that volume will be rung up in the next few weeks.

"We are no longer just an auction site," eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove said. "People are coming for every type of purchase."

The vast majority of sellers are individuals and small businesses like the one Paul Mercy, 43, began from his San Jose home five months ago. His biggest items so far are 18-carat gold chains and carved imitation alabaster Indian Chiefs on a Cherrywood pedestal.

"Anything that would look like a good and unique item will move rapidly," Mercy said.

But major manufacturers and retailers also hawk merchandise through eBay storefronts now. In addition to shopping for the Beanie Babies and stuffed bears that were once eBay's hallmark, shoppers can peruse offerings from Disney, Kodak, Gap and Victoria's Secret -- and of course, toy stores. BEAN WATCHER IS BACK
Hi Lisa! My site was temporarily down for a few days.  I'm back online  now.   Can you please let others know about my return?  Also, there's a new URL for my news page:  http://news.beanwatcher.com/

Things are still tentative for now, so there's a slight chance that the site will go down again in the middle of transitioning to the new server.  Hopefully not though!

Thanks! Bean Watcher

ELLYBEANS LOST SITE TO TY
Thanks to Candy for letting me know the following:
When visiting Ellena's site at: http://www.infobeanie.co.uk/ you will see the following message. "Hello all visitors. Well, Ty wants our domain name, so we have to move :-( We signed away our rights and that should have been enough to get Ty to pay for a new domain name and website for us. However, the money did not arrive by the date it should have done, so we took no action, so now we have passed the date agreed for us to take the site down. So now, they have changed the rules. We have to take the site down before they will release any money. Sorry, but this means, thanks to Ty's lovely lawyers, you will have to look at this page for a while until we receive some money to pay for a new domain. All entries so far for the quiz will still count and if we don't get up and running again before the end of the month(which doesn't look likely)the winner will be picked from entries submitted so far.  You can still email us at elly.beans@ntlworld.com "

Dream Catchers delivers merrier Christmas
Children benefit from Manley program
(11/26/02)--This is a busy time of year. Many of us are rushing around trying to think of just the right gift for that someone special. We'd like you to slow down for just a few minutes and consider giving a smile to a child in need.

A project called "Dream Catchers" started when a Flint-area family wanted to do something to give back to the school that bears their name. The moment children walk through the doors of Frank J. Manley Elementary School, they know people believe in their dreams.

On the way to their goals, these children face more obstacles than most. Nine out of every 10 of the children at Manley qualify for the free lunch program. Most live in public housing. Some come to school needing showers, clothing or basic hygiene items. And for many, school is a safe haven.

This Christmas, the Manley family is reaching out to the school children, just as they believe a man many called the father of community education would have. Ann Margret Manley started Dream Catchers of Genesee County.

It's a community-wide effort to deliver sweet dreams to all 402 Manley children at Christmas with a sleeping bag, pillow, book, Beanie Baby, toothbrush and basic toiletries. Dream Catchers are usually hung by children's beds to entangle bad dreams and make children feel protected through the night. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

Top 10: Collectible Fads
There are two types of collectors: The refined collectors who have a passion for stamps, antiques and art... and then there's the rest. Those in the latter group will collect just about anything, as long as they feel some sort of connection with the items.

In recent decades, a number of useless widgets and doohickeys like Furbies, Koosh Balls and Beanie Babies came to be and ultimately served that market, giving birth to fashionable trends that can be quite profitable for the owner. With that, I present to you the top ten collector's fads. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

Tradition comes to an end
The plug has been pulled, at least for this year, on the Sagon family's holiday light display around Lake Amah Lee in Hampton. For area residents, a trek to the grand unveiling has been an after-dinner Thanksgiving tradition for more than a decade.

"It would draw thousands of people between Thanksgiving and Christmas," McDonough resident Larry Stanley said. "It was just a constant stream of cars." But a combination of circumstances led Sharon Sagon to skip the months of preparations this year.

Changes to the road configuration following construction of the new Legacy Lakes subdivision to the east made driving in the area iffy. And Sagon's beloved husband of 25 years passed away in July.

"I really wanted to do it, to celebrate my husband's life," Sagon said. "But the road is too dangerous. They've put a curve right where we kept the donkeys for the kids to pet and we've already had a few cars go off." Raymond Sagon was known locally for the large metal sculptures of flowers, firecrackers and windmills he began making after he retired.

At his wife's urging, he turned his hand to Christmas displays including the beanie baby-filled Elf House, a 20-foot Christmas tree that floated above the lake and a 500-square-foot American flag hauled out of storage last year in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "One of my favorites was the bug band," Stanley said. "He made a little disco floor with lights and welded the bugs playing instruments. It was just meticulous work." READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

Cracker Barrel Comments
From: Bean eWonderland (http://www.beaniewonderland.com/hn.html)
Several readers have shared their thoughts on Saturdays Cracker Barrel article submitted by Jake. Jamie from the Bean Scene writes: Using what Jake said I went and looked for the number of all the Cracker Barrel shops. On their web site it says they have 457 stores in 41 states. I multiplied it by 96 and came up with 43,872. If you include the 20 shops Cracker Barrel wants to open by August '03 the number is 45,792. That's a lot for one beanie, but I don't think that number could support EVERY beanie collector in the U.S. or the world.

Bob also came to the same conclusion (figures differ slightly), he writes: According to the Cracker Barrel website, there are 463 Cracker Barrel locations in the US. Multiply by 96 (the number each store is expected to receive) and you get 44,448. If re-orders can be placed, Herschel may not be as elusive as some have speculated.

Typing in a simple search of 'Herschel Beanie in hand' returned over 280 results on eBay auctions and replacing Herschel with 'Cracker Barrel' returned over 320 results.

Reseller wins right to use TM in domain name ~ Ty Inc. v. Ruth Perryman reversed on appeal
Chicago, Illinois -- (OfficialSpin.com) -- 24/11/02 -- A district court judge erred in enjoining a Web site operator from using the terms "Beanie" and "Beanies" in "any business name, Internet domain name, or trademark," the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled October 4 2002. The court vacated and remanded an injunction issued by U.S. Judge John F. Grady of the Northern District of Illinois against Web site operator Ruth Perryman in a suit brought by Beanie Babies manufacturer Ty Inc., citing that a reseller of "Beanie Babies" did not violate the Federal Trademark Dilution Act when she used plaintiff Ty Inc.'s "Beanies" trademark in the title and domain name of her web site, at which site approximately 80 per cent of the toys offered for sale are used "Beanie Babies" manufactured by Ty.

Ty Inc. is the manufacturer of a line of bean bag stuffed animals it markets under the trademarks "Beanie Babies" and "Beanies." Ruth Perryman operated a web site at the domain www.barginbeanies.com, which site is titled "Bargain Beanies." Eighty per cent of the toys Perryman offers for sale at her site are used "Beanie Babies" manufactured by Ty. The remaining twenty percent of her products consist of competing children's toys manufactured by others, including "Planet Plush" and "Rothschild Bears." Perryman's site contained a disclaimer that states that it is not affiliated with Ty. VIEW ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

Cracker Barrel
From: Bean eWonderland (http://www.beaniewonderland.com/hn.html)
Jake shares his thoughts on the Cracker Barrel beanie: To shed some light on the new craker barrel bear. Each store received 96 of them or 8 dozen. Everyone keeps saying that they are so rare and they aren't I went to the local store and they have had them for in for 2 days and still have them in stock today. Beanies are not that hot where they are selling off the shelf. They told me that they sold about 40 of them on the first day. How many Cracker Barrel stores are and multiply this by the 96 each will receive.

December Newbies
From: Beanieholics (http://www.randyandtheresa.com/)
Our retailer friend 'T' provides a peek at what we may expect soon from Ty:

Hi Randy,
I have a list of the Beanies for December. Here it is:

Glider the bird
Snowcap the Samoyed (all white fluffy dog)
Flaky the white sit up bear with silver snowflakes
January birthday bear
An all orange lay down kitten....I can't remember the name

Classic: Precious the black cat. Sit up style like Crystal and Coal in the older Classics

An all red bear Punkie. Don't know the name.

Also, there is a strong rumor that 42 new pieces from Ty will be introduced in January. Must be for the Winter Gift Shows because he always releases a lot during the winter and summer gift shows. ~T

POMPEY INFO
LynUK shares with Ms. Janie (http://www.msjanie.com)
Hi, I just got off the phone to the Portsmouth Football Club shop as last week I received the bear I ordered for myself but not the one I ordered for my daughter. They advised that during the 3 days they were available to order over 8000 orders were received and they will not be able to fulfil all orders. When asked if they would be getting any more in I was advised there may or may not be a delivery at the end of December! I would just like to add a big thanks to all the staff at the shop. The packaging is excellent and they have protected all the tags with bubble wrap as when asked for tag protectors they were not given any! LynUK

IT'S NEWS EASY BEING BEANIE, BUT IT'S A LOT OF FUN
Collector takes stuffed animals on the road

It’s not easy being Richard B. Davis.
Anywhere he drives in town, eyes track his every move. He feels their stares from the back seat. When he gets out of the car, the eyes follow him from the dashboard. More eyes watch him as he opens the trunk.
The hundreds of eyes are embedded in the colorful soft heads of Beanie Babies, which are easily the obsession of the man’s life.
Davis is a grown man, retired from a respectable job as a test engineer for Ford Aerospace.
But a few years ago, he spotted a few Beanie Babies in a local gift shop and he was hooked.
It wasn’t enough to decorate the apartment he and his wife Delores share with the little people and creatures. He turned his 1968 fire engine red Dodge Polara into a traveling beanie-mobile about three years ago. The car was geared up for the job already-Davis had restored it in 1980 while he lived in Colorado.
On the front hood, he calls it the “1968 Beanie Baby Muscle Car.”
Now the Beanie Babies go everywhere with him in the hard-to-miss car — in the backseat and front seat, on the dashboard watching the road, and in a special plastic fence-enclosed “zoo” in the trunk. A lively Beanie girl dances from the antenna, and creepy-crawlers inch up the inside of the windows. READ FULL ARTICLE HERE

Of course, the individual Boppers were different. The current offer allows collectors to select their own six (any of the currents, including the newly released ones). The backpack is then included free.

Friends honor doer of good deeds
Agnes Slaughter didn't have a clue that she was to be the guest of honor at a gathering of two dozen friends at the Billings Hotel on Monday.

But it was no surprise to her friends that each had nice things to say about Agnes.

When Martha Bradley had knee surgery, Agnes came to her house or called every day. If Martha was in pain, Agnes would sit and talk.

"She's just a doll," Martha said about her petite, 89-year old friend.

Lisha Koch, who has had an illness for the last 15 years, frequently opens her front door to find a Beanie Baby or a chocolate cake left by Agnes. VIEW COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE

Punkies(TM), Pluffies(TM) and Teenie Beanie Boppers(TM) Join Ty's Plush Toy Line
From: Ms. Janie (http://www.msjanie.com)
Affordable. High Quality, Kid Friendly Plush Toys Are The Perfect Holiday Gift!! Ty Warner, creator of the wildly popular Beanie Babies®, has launched three new plush toy lines that have recently joined the Ty product family. With the introduction of Ty's Punkies(TM), Pluffies(TM) and Teenie Beanie Boppers(TM), all with a suggested retail price of $5.00, the company is offering high quality, kid friendly plush toys that are the perfect holiday gift. (Photo: Newscom: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20021118/TYLOGO

"The company motto has always been, 'We make the finest plush toys in the world, affordable,'" said Warner. "This is a standard that still holds true to this day and is best exemplified with our Punkies(TM), Pluffies(TM) and Teenie Beanie Boppers(TM)." Ty's Punkies(TM) are filled with spunk and loads of attitude. These whimsical little beanbag pals are made of a funky new fabric that looks spiky. Surprisingly soft, their squeezability even allows children to squish them into a ball and watch as they spring right back into shape. Each of the Punkies(TM) has its own wacky look that kids and parents alike will fall in love with. Pluffies(TM), one of the newest and most loveable lines in the Ty product family, are characterized as "sweet and soft and hard to resist". Made from soft Tylux(TM) and filled with fluff and just the right amount of "beans", these six friendly faces will enchant customers. Weighted slightly toward their paws, they sit nicely and stay in place until it is time to play. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/021119/nyfnsa41_1.html

Toymakers embrace the familiar
From: Ms. Janie (http://www.msjanie.com)
SANTA'S COMING: Few companies are willing to go out on a limb as Chicken Dance Elmo and remote-controlled minicars could well be the hot sellers of the year 2002 As children scoured the huge Toys 'R` Us in Times Square on Friday night, the new Chicken Dance Elmo was dancing his jig and Barbie Rapunzel was busily growing (and retracting) her blond hair. Boxes of Play-Doh were being scooped up, and a group of toddlers stood mesmerized before a room-size Monopoly board. The good news was that the toys had a certain timeless quality. The bad news was that they all seemed oh so familiar. For toymakers approaching Christmas, this is not a big year for originality. Like moviemakers releasing yet another clone of Batman or Men in Black, toy manufacturers this holiday are relying mainly on sequels, best-selling blasts from the past. Besides introducing another Barbie, retuning the Bratz dolls -- plastic teenagers with enormous pouty lips and hip-hugger jeans -- and presenting the latest Harry Potter tie-ins, toy companies are reaching back even further, playing it safe with Care Bears redux and "the new Barney." Even GI Joe is back. Toymakers concede that this year, there is no first-time Cabbage Patch or Beanie Baby or Razor Scooter. "After all, your basic 6-year-old doesn't remember GI Joe," one toy company executive said. http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2002/11/18/180070

No More Beanies For Now
The clamour for Pompey Beanie Bears refuses to die down. Despite a plea for no more requests they keep on coming in from all over the World.

The Beanie Bears made as an exclusive product for the club by our sponsors ty, are currently out of stock as shop staff clear the backlog of thousands of orders which have come flooding in. No more orders are being taken.

For customers in America who have already pre-ordered their bears the club would like to confirm that these will be delivered within 8-10 weeks due to the demand. This is unlikely to be before Christmas.

And when will more Beanie Bears arrive? It is impossible to say but as soon as they do it will be here, and here only, on the official web site.

eBay looking for a very merry Christmas
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- While traditional brick-and-mortar retailers fear an economic grinch may dampen holiday sales this year, Silicon Valley's own version of Santa Claus expects to be ho-ho-hoing all the way to the bank.

Online auction giant eBay Inc. is bracing for record sales of everything from the hot new Barbie-as-Rapunzel doll to unusual gifts for former dot-commers who used to have everything.

In fact, the company that bills itself as the world's largest virtual marketplace is beinning to look a lot more like its main street and shopping mall competitors, with holiday trappings like glitzy advertising and merchants who offer gift wrapping.

Pompey News
From: Bean eWonderland (http://www.beaniewonderland.com/hn.html)
Jim writes: I was at the Pompey Shop yesterday morning as I had a theory that they would be selling Pompey on match days. Not true unfortunately, but I did have a chat with the manager. I got the following info. Pompey will go on sale in the store, but not necessarily on match day. The Bears will go on sale on the day after they are delivered and it was a co-incidence that they were on sale match day before. The deliveries just happened to arrive on Friday. They are not told by TY beforehand when the Bears will arrive, they just turn up. They do not know whether there will be another delivery this month, or if the next is in December. Not sure if I was being fobbed off with a standard story, but she sounded genuine. Not all bad news yesterday though, we won 3-0

Herschel Update
From: Beanieholics (http://www.randyandtheresa.com/)
We stopped in at a Cracker Barrel store yesterday and talked with the store manager. He confirmed that there would be a Herschel Beanie Baby available in December. He stated that he did not know how many of these his store would get but that they would be limited to two per customer. The store manager was also surprised that we even knew about this as he had just received a company email about Herschel just the day before.

NEW CHUBBLEYS ARE COMING (probably this week)
I will let you know when my favorite retailers get their NEW Chubbley Bears in stock. ;o)

SPEAKING OF CHUBBLEY BEARS... you are invited to the "Chubbley Corners Home for the Holidays Open House" today. Kathie writes: "The ever growing popularity of the Chubbley Bears are now in Singapore. Singapore has jsut come on board with retailers carrying these adroable little collectable bears. To welcome Singapore as the newest country to have collectors we at Chubbley Corners are having a Holiday Open House on Sunday, November 17th. In just slightly over one year in production Chubbley Bears are fastly picking up steam in the Arctophilic world. Come see us at CHUBBLEY CORNERS and check out our information pages... a prize of the very limited Canadian Tagged Jubiliee Chubbley will be available for all visitors to enter to win." http://www.chubbleycorners.com/

NOT ALL BOTM WILL BE BEARS
I've received emails from several readers wondering if all of the Beanie Babies for the BOTM will be bears. When visiting http://www.tytrade.com/bom_order_page you will see, on the very bottom of the page: Note: For information on terms and conditions click here. When you click on the "click here" http://www.tytrade.com/bom_terms it takes you to the terms and conditions page which state the following: "Some, but not all, of the Beanie Babies you will receive will be bears, but we think you will love each and every one of them." The new ASK TY question has a runaway leader with a question that is clearly outlined under the terms. Leading by 74% is the following question: "Is the "Beanie Baby Of The Month" going to be all Beanie bears or assorted animals?". This makes no sense to me since the answer is easily found. Is it me or are the ASK TY questions getting sillier? LOL

COMMENTS ABOUT BUYING FROM TY STORE
Leanne writes: "I couldn't agree more with what Stephen said about paying more for beanies in the UK. We pay the same in pounds as what the US pays in dollars and that works out almost twice as much as whats paid in the US... if that makes sense.

And also, ty does just charge too much for shipping to UK from the ty store. I get beanies shipped from friends and traders and the amount on the box never comes close to what ty charges. It would put me off buying from the ty store even if I did have a credit card! Leanne"

ASK TY
Q:
How do you decide what to make for your next Beanie, where do you get the inspiration for all of them, how do you come up with the color combinations? They are all awesome! (submitted by Jezufreak)
A: Most of the Beanies are very spontaneous. I always carry a sketch pad so when an idea hits me I can record it right on the spot. Colors and fabrics are key Beanie ingredients and to complete the process . . . . a name and poem.

Toy Makers Hope Children Will See Oldies as Goodies

COMMENTS ABOUT BEANIES BEING SOLD AT THE TY STORE
Stephen writes: "i think ty are doing it this way because they can make more money out of the beanies. because they will get $5 for each beanie this way instead of just $2.50 cents when they send the to the shops that sell the beanies.. in the uk the beanies when you buy them are the equivalent to about $9 usa.. why we have to pay more i just dont know..when i used to visit the flea market in the usa their where guys selling the new beanies for $4..where they get them from a just dont know because none of the guys that i spoke to had a ty account.. also the cost of ty posting beanies to the uk is just to much..because of all the beanies that i send to the usa and the beanies i sent to the uk when i was their in the usa i know how much it cost for posting..ty are just ripping us uk collecters off as usual...

Collectibles Extravaganzas Magazine OFFICIAL Launch
Ms. Janie is the Editor-in-Chief of a new collectible's magazine. It's sure to be a hit and with Ms. Janie at the helm.. it will be a quality magazine with writers that you will recognize.

Ms. Janie writes: "
Please allow me to give you some history behind the making of this unique magazine.

This past August I was approached by a publisher who inquired about me being the editor for a new magazine. After many hours of talking, brainstorming and market searching, we came to the following conclusion. While there are many magazines that carry contents on a specific line, i.e. Barbie, Comic Books, Dolls, etc. we had a difficult time finding a magazine that featured collectibles from around the world.

Our Premiere Collectible issue will touch upon many avenues of collecting and offer articles written by talented writers. While this publication is written for collectors of all kinds it also offers humor and insight information into various markets and the manufacturers who help to keep these markets thriving.

Here’s hoping you find the World of Collectibles as exciting as I have. It has been said that “one mans junk, is another mans treasure”. But in this case it could very well be a highly sought out collectible."

Happy Collecting,
Ms. Janie

Messages of 9/11 pain, hope on display at FDU
The exhibit stands as a stark reminder of what has been lost. Tall, rectangular kiosks - which make up the "9.11 NJ: Response and Reflection" exhibit - flow down a hallway and spill into a room in Edward Williams Hall at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Metropolitan Campus. The kiosks are covered in poems and tributes to those killed in the terror attacks.

"Dear Dad, I miss you very much. I love you very much. You always made me laugh especially when you danced. Watch over me! Love always, Loren Asciak."

The message is to Michael Asciak of Ridgefield from his young daughter. Asciak worked in the foreign exchange operations department at Carr Futures on the 92nd floor of the north tower.

The kiosks, which are 7 feet and 8 feet tall, were originally standing at a ferry terminal at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Relief workers and family members of victims had been able to give a voice to their emotions in the days and months after the attacks by writing on the wooden rectangles. For months, a ferry boat for family members left from Jersey City to the World Trade Center ruins.

The shrines have been protected with sheets of hard plastic that encase the poems, letters, drawings, and mementos. Stapled to the boards are photographs, children's drawings, and Mass cards. Hanging from pushpins are stuffed toys and Beanie Babies, faded flowers, and even a strand of rosary beads. http://www.bergen.com/page.php?level_3_id=7&page=5645888

Longtime downtown newsstand Mid-City News to close
Grace Westly worked at the Mid-City News in downtown Sioux City for 22 years. The newsstand, a downtown fixture, will be closing. (Staff photo by Jerry Mennenga)

Downtown businesspeople soon will have to go elsewhere if they want to buy a copy of the Wall Street Journal or make a last-minute greeting card purchase before heading home.

For roughly 50 years, Mid-City News has been downtown Sioux City's source for hundreds of magazine titles, big-city newspapers, lottery tickets and many other items. The newsstand, a fixture in the Orpheum Building at 516 Pierce St., will close Nov. 23.

"I can't imagine (what people working downtown will do), because there's no place for these people to go. There's no place like it downtown," said Grace Westly, who began working as a cashier at the newsstand in 1980 when it was still known as a pipe and tobacco shop and went by the name Mid-City News/David's Briar Shop.

Westly was the manager when the announcement was made that the store would close. She left in October for another job opportunity.

"I really didn't want to leave," she said.

The business opened in the early 1950s and featured major newspapers from across the country as well as fine tobacco products. Twelve years ago, Dakota News Inc. of Sioux Falls bought the newsstand. The store eventually reduced the number of newspapers it offered and also limited tobacco products to just cigarettes and cigars. In addition to newspapers, magazines and greeting cards, the store offers snack items, greeting cards and Beanie Babies. VIEW ARTICLE HERE

Alex writes:

"Hi Lisa - I found something online that I'd not seen or heard of before so I thought you could pass it on.  Nothing major - just interesting.

I was doing a search for dog names and found a site that lets you search for the meaning of names (just like for baby names) and it actually has a section for beanie babies names, lists their meaning, and even has a short description of the beanie baby itself - including "approximately" how many of each were produced.  I'm not sure where the info comes from, but it sure was a shock to see it there.  It's also interesting to note that this is a website run by Australians.

The site is : http://www.doggynames.com/search/index.asp

Under the "Name Category" label, click the drop down box and select beanie babies.  You don't have to select male or female or anything else, just click "fetch"."

Pompey Update
From: Bean eWonderland (http://beaniewonderland.com/hn.html
Jim our resident Portsmouth football fan and beanie collector writes: With regards to the Pompey Bear, I have a very reliable source who tells me that on 2nd November the shop sold 500 from their delivery of 1,080 (the second delivery). The rest went to online customers. Presumably, this means that 580 of the 7000+ online orders will be sent out. Heaven knows when the rest will go out, as the store cannot or will not confirm when the next delivery will be, or if they are getting one.

Gifts, Decor and More
Atascadero shop stocked with 60 vendors' goods

If walking into Gifts Décor and More feels like entering an old-fashioned bazaar, that's exactly what owner Rose Marie Sheetz intended.

When Sheetz set up the Atascadero gift shop three years ago, she advertised booths for rent to local craftsmen and artists. The store carries a broad selection of country- and garden-themed merchandise from more than 60 vendors, including about 40 who rent space from Sheetz. The other items she buys and sells herself.

Vendors pay to rent the space plus a 10 percent commission to Sheetz for anything they sell through the store. In return, Sheetz and a couple of assistants wait on customers, package purchases and pay all sales taxes.

"All they have to do is bring the merchandise into the store, Sheetz says. "We are sort of a business within a business."

The concept has worked so well, Sheetz says the store has racked up more than $500,000 in sales in less than three years. Her best sellers are garden items, Beanie Babies, knives, swords and jewelry. READ ARTICLE HERE

'Hodge Podge' Variations - More pics
From: Doodle's Page (http://www.doodlespage.com)
As an update to yesterday's note, Nancy K. sends us another email. She is one of the lucky ones to now have the two noted versions of Hodge Podge, and writes:

I found the second HodgePodge today at a second store.  I am attaching a new picture of both  of the variations so you can see the different paws.  The retailer did receive one bag of this new beanie, and all were the same in the bag.  The variation is like Frankenteddy with different feet.  The material is the same on the rest of both beanies - just the paws are different.  This is not just a difference in material shading, but a different color and different material on the paws.  Hope you can tell from my pics, I only have a very cheap camera, lol.  Thanks. Parents with kids 'going out' need to know what's going on
Afriend asked if I understood the middle-school concept of going out.

"Coming out, staying out and camping out I understand completely," I said. But going out is a mystery. "It's like quantum physics, only harder."

Going out, in case you've been under a rock, is something that kids around the age of 12 do. That said, kids as young as 10 have been known to be going out. Kids as young as 8. No doubt, there is a 3-year-old in a preschool somewhere who was just picked up from finger-painting and has announced that she is officially "going out."

To clarify the national dialogue between parents and children, I've put together a frequently-asked-questions list, along with answers.

• What does it mean when someone is "going out"?

It means someone in the early grip of preadolescence, or perhaps still in the grip of Beanie Babies, is interested in someone of the opposite sex and that interest is returned. http://www.indystar.com/article.php?lori10.html,living

A: One of the most expensive Beanies to produce just happens to be one of the newest . . . . TURK-e. This special Beanie has over 20 different pattern pieces and 8 different fabrics. In fact, the custom printed fabric used on the body of TURK-e took over 4 months to design and manufacture.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE BOTM
SHeL writes: "Hi Lisa Some people will like this ... I don't !!! If I was a retailer ... I would resent it very much. Ty Inc is getting too greedy. It's time to join lots of others and stop collecting Beanies !!! Have a great day :o) SHeL"

Johnson: Broncos fan's basement a testament to love, loyalty
And I thought I was a Broncos fan...

"You aren't going to believe this," Dick Schwartz says, as we enter the front door of his sister Barbara's Denver home.

We were headed for the basement, which he'd sworn in his pitch to get me there was "totally unique." I was quite doubtful until we hit the top of the stairs.

The walls of the hallway leading down were covered - no, dripping - from floor to ceiling with everything Broncos. And that wasn't even the good stuff.

Oh, my goodness. The basement of Barbara Richardson's home is a sea of orange and blue. Dancing helmeted dolls, Ed's EndZone O's, barbecues, windsocks, helmets and Beanie Babies. Nothing I write here will do it complete justice. READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE

Old Beanies Shipping?
From: Bean eWonderland (http://beaniewonderland.com/hn.html
From the email: In my local store (Solihull UK), they've just stocked in from the Ty warehouse many old beanies, which may not be a surprise, but amongst them are Glory, White face Spangle, The End, and other common older bears. That was most unusual, I asked them if they really did get them from Ty warehouse and they confirmed they did. Christine.

It's a whole new ball game
'Tenna toppers have become more than cutesy accessories for the car

For Kathy Jaramillo, the first drop in a very deep bucket arrived innocently enough courtesy of a local trash collection agency.

The simplicity of the pingpong-sized ball appealed to her. It was small, colorful and deceptive in its genius. It was kind of cute and it was amazingly functional. Its friendly bob was whimsy at its highest, its gleam a beacon in a crowded parking lot.

One led to another, two led to three, three to a dozen, a dozen to a score. All shapes, all colors, all sentiments. Before long, Jaramillo had a bona fide obsession.

Behold the antenna ball, a 20th century invention finding fresh life in a new millennium.

Jaramillo, who lives in Fontana and has a Web site devoted to antenna balls, estimates her collection of 'tenna toppers at 250 and growing. The assortment of balls, figures and odd shapes follows no rhyme or reason. If it's free, it's hers. If it's unique, she'll buy.

"Antenna balls appeal to me because they're colorful and have great designs, but are small enough to be able to have a lot of them," Jaramillo says. "They can personalize your car but aren't permanent."

Apparently, a lot of people feel that way. Take a look the next time you walk through a parking lot or are stuck in traffic on the Bay Bridge.
