But not eBay, the online auction company that in just a few years has become one of America’s biggest business stories and something of a cultural phenomenon.

The company, which connects buyers with sellers, is used by 50 million people worldwide who spend an estimated $41 million every day.

With growth that no one could have predicted, eBay went from Beanie Babies to BMWs in just four years, its CEO, Meg Whitman, tells correspondent Charlie Rose.

Koos' extravagant lifestyle on display
House, jewels . . . everything must go
The assets of Anita and Tony Koo, the Calgary socialites accused of defrauding retired Mexican oilman Salvador Casanova out of $9 million US between 1995 and January 2002, will be sold at auction.

The Koos are alleged to have used Casanova's money to finance a lavish lifestyle, including a $1.4-million Cdn house, luxury cars, fine furs, jewelry and trips around the world, while holding elaborate dinner parties and showering gifts on Calgary's elite, including Premier Ralph Klein, who declined to accept any gifts.

The case is believed to be one of the largest instances of bank fraud in Canadian history.

Among the items up for sale are:

- More than 900 bottles of vintage wine, valued anywhere between $150,000 and $200,000;
- Five Rolex watches, one appraised at $31,920;
- Rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings, expected to fetch $660,000;
- Home furnishings -- including a Toshiba big-screen TV -- valued at approximately $175,000;
- Four vehicles -- including a 1999 Lexus LX 470 and a 2001 Audi S4 -- valued at between $165,000 and $180,000;
- Eight fur coats.

Additional items include some 100 pieces of Waterford and Oscar de la Renta crystal, a collection of Royal Albert dishes, two ammonite fossils and more than 1,000 Beanie Baby stuffed toys.

Update on the Frankenteddy Auction

For some reason, as of this writing, the high bid for the Frankenteddy Auction has dropped to $12,505 (US).  Since the high bidder had an obligation to complete the auction transaction, one can only speculate what has happened.  Whatever happened, it’s unfortunate since the money raised would have benefited the charitable organization UNICEF…. Perhaps the high bid will be reinstated -- to help the children of the world….

Following our story a couple of days ago the order for Pompey's exclusive Ty Beanie Bear have continued to gone through the roof.

Despite selling out on Tuesday the next batch expected in November have been ordered for on a daily basis and shop staff are now finding it hard to cope with the thousands of orders.

They have asked for no more orders till they have sorted the preset influx out and have temporarily removed this item from the shopping zone on this site.

Little imps of all stripes will find Halloween treats pretty easy to come by here next Thursday afternoon.
Because the Northwood Chamber of Commerce plans to host a Halloween parade on Central Avenue from 4:30-5 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 31, and a free sack of candy will be given to each trick-or-treater who participates.

The procession of goblins and ghouls and princesses and witches - and any other little monster that shows up - will take place between Northwood Civic Center and NSB Bank. Participants should meet at the civic center at 4:30 p.m. on Halloween.

The event will include costume contests. The best-dressed trick-or-treater in each of the three age divisions (0-3 years of age, 4-6, 7 and up) will win either a free movie rental courtesy of Townmart, a Beanie Baby from Main Street Treasures or a cookie from Sandi's Bakery. READ THE ARTICLE HERE

Yukon Woman Accused Of Selling Fake Beanie Babies
Yukon (AP) - Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson says a Yukon woman has been selling fake beanie babies on the Internet.

The woman's attorney says his client is a victim.

Edmondson says Shellie Brassfield was selling 50 cent imitations of the collectible toy for 75- to 100-dollars and has filed a civil lawsuit against her.

Some authentic beanie babies are selling for up to two-thousand dollars on Internet auction sites.

Brassfield attorney Jack Pointer says Brassfield thought she was selling authentic beanie babies after buying them from another person online.

Pointer says people who bought the toys were repaid and Brassfield offered to take back the merchandise.

Edmondson disagrees, saying customers claim Brassfield won't return their e-mails and wouldn't accept a request sent by certified mail. READ THE ARTICLE HERE

Portsmouth Beanie Update

'Jim' our beanie friend and life time supporter of Portsmouth Football Club sent us the following information when I posed the question, 'Does Ty Europe or Portsmouth FC receive the profits from the Pompey Beanie?:

We too have been speculating whether Pompey or Ty get the profits from the sale of the Beanie. Nobody knows, but we are amazed by many of the stories going round, some of which are blatantly untrue. There are a lot of people who seem to think that there will be thousands more of these Bears arriving, but when I telephoned the store this morning, they told me that they are only expecting 1 more delivery in November and they will be selling Pompey in the Shop as well as on-line.

As far as they know, they are only expecting one more delivery. They will not be taking Telephone orders, and they couldn't say how many would be for sale on-line because that is a separate department from the shop. They did assure me that Pompey would be made available for the fans to buy, and their policy would remain 1 per customer (I do know one person who went in 11 times, and another who went in 6 times, and so it seems that it is 1 per customer per visit).

There is also a rumour that 1 person got over 60 of the Bears by paying the fans on the day £10.00 each to buy him a Bear. Just waiting now to see what happens.

Also on the same subject, Cory from America sends us the following information: I just went to the pompey fc website to register and order a Pompey beanie. I had no trouble ordering to a US address, but when I saw the shipping charge to the United States I about fell out of my chair! The cost of the beanie is very reasonable but add to it the whopping £21.28GBP ($32.96USD)! I thought you might pass this along to others ordering from the US so they are forewarned. Also, it says to allow 43 days for shipping.

Some more info for you concerning Pompey. Apparently there will be a total of 30,000 made with deliveries spread over several months. Multiple orders of Pompey from P.F.C. are permitted but they can only be placed one at a time. While the system is apparently allowing the order quantity to be changed to more than one, these orders are being changed manually back to one. PFC never anticipated or provided for having quantity restrictions in their software. A friend who lives in Canterbury, England confirmed the above this morning. She was also told that they are totally swamped and the server has been overloaded at times. To think we got involved in beanies by accident, and now even our cats compete with TY for floor, bed and sofa space!!! All the best from Kanata's homeland! Rory McEvoy

Advertisers target 'tweens': Kids 8-to-12 spend billions
CHICAGO — She might not know it, possibly because she's out shopping, but 11-year-old Alex Wagner is at the center of a marketing war.

While the 1990s were all about teenagers and their angst and anti-establishment, the 2000s are shaping up as the decade of kid consumerism.

Alex is in that age group known as the "tween" years — that truncated frame of years roughly sketched as between 8 years old and 12 years old.

Once considered off-limits to advertisers, they are now part of a 30-million-person force — nearly twice as many as a decade ago — that is one of the most powerful consumer groups in the nation.

The demographic is also one of the most diverse in the nation: One in every three tweens is non-white.

Their power is enormous. It is estimated that tweens directly spend $10 billion annually, and influence an additional $74 billion of family spending.

It's an ideal combination for manufacturers and retailers, who have helped fuel the buying craze with faux leather pants and flirty tops. A line of pedicure products beckons to this age group. Marketers even host slumber parties to find out how to make a tween spend.

To help families juggle the needs of all their children, The Valley Hospital of Ridgewood started celebrating siblings six years ago with its Teddy Bear Party, now an annual event.

"When a child is sick, it affects the entire family," said Rose Marie Ranuro, director of the hospital's maternal-child health care services. "We thought, let's do something for the siblings. Today we feel the focus is on them."

On Saturday, about 50 children attended this year's "Beary Special Beach Party," at the hospital's Kraft Center on Essex Road. In addition to music, face painting, and crafts, each child went home with a teddy bear donated by residents and companies in the community.

I mailed earlier to say that there might be a new exclusive beanie available from Portsmouth Football Club. I have been down to the Fratton Park (Home of Portsmouth Football Club) and in the shop I managed to purchase the brand new TY POMPEY BEANIE BEAR. This beanie is exclusive to
Portsmouth Football club and is on sale at one per customer only, this bear cannot be bought anywhere else and will probably become extremely rare to get hold of.

I have taken a picture of the bear and one of the inside of the swing tag, it reads "Play up Pompey, Pompey play up"

Pompey is the nickname for Portsmouth football club who are sponsored by TY, and the Play up Pompey, Pompey play up is the song chanted by the Portsmouth fans at Pompeys games.

The company recalled 295,000 pounds of turkey and chicken products from a suburban Philadelphia plant on Wednesday, but expanded the recall over the weekend after tests came back positive for a strain of the potentially fatal bacteria, the company said Sunday.

The nationwide recall covers deli meat sold under the company's Wampler Foods brand. The meat was processed at the company's plant in Franconia, Pa., from May 1 through Oct. 11.

Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge will host an open house on Sunday, October 13, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Marriage not for all, TV judge' says

Beanies bargain site wins domain dispute
A federal appeals panel has ruled that the operator of Bargainbeanies.com is not violating the trademark of Beanie Babies creator Ty by offering used dolls through the Web address. The case is significant because it supports the ability of second-hand resellers to market and hawk their wares over the Internet without running afoul of trademark laws.

Ty had sued Ruth Perryman, arguing that her Bargainbeanies.com site diluted the company trademark. 

However, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit sided with Perryman, ruling that she was not confusing site visitors or diluting the trademark because she was indeed selling Beanie Babies and included a disclaimer that she was not affiliated with Ty.

According to the judges, that would amount to saying that if a "used car dealer truthfully advertised that it sold Toyotas, or if a muffler manufacturer truthfully advertised that it specialized in making mufflers for installation in Toyotas, Toyota would have a claim of trademark infringement."

The judges also said Ty's practice of releasing large quantities of Beanie Babies for a limited amount of time creates a secondary market for the toys. Ty representatives could not be immediately reached for comment. http://news.com.com/2100-1023-961090.html?tag=cd_mh

KANATA NEWS

I was just talking to one of my Chubbley retailers who also sells TY. The new Kanata Bear is coming out in 13 Different Variations!!!! 1 for each of the 10 provinces and 1 for ea. of the 3 Territories. All retailers will be getting some of each... but amounts on which ones are coming and how many of each is not known... My retailers speculation is this: Knowing TY there will be some more available than others .... only time will tell which will be hard to find. Apparently each provincial bear will have the provincial flag/emblem on its ear.
