EUGENE KRABS
Michael writes: "Go figure I was near a Best Buy Store yesterday on Sunday but didn't think to go in... Besides that is the last place I would expect to look for Beanie Babies let alone Exclusive one's. Anyway I did call Best Buy to see if they could set one aside for me until tomorrow on Tuesday the 31st since I am also headed out of town that way anyway but they said that they have plenty but now I Just got off the phone and they are going to hold a Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3 Nick DVD for me and a Mr. Krabs because they said they are surprisingly beginning to run out. Amazing what changes from Monday Morning to Monday Evening..LOL!!  So anyway the main reason I am contacting you is that I am surprised that They don't list Mr. Krabs full name. His Full name is Mr. Eugene Krabs. That is correct his first name is Eugene Krabs. Also I have noticed there have been a few people misspelling the name of this new Spongebob Beanie. It is not spelled Crabs but rather his last name is Spelled Krabs. Also I found interesting is that it does not refer to Mr. Krabs as a beanie baby but rather a Plush Toy. Here is the link. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=category&id=pcmcat103500050039

TY UK PARTY UPDATE
John writes: "Hi Lisa, Less than a week go to now, and the final touches are being put into place for the Party on Friday....the full auction list will be published Tuesday/Wednesday for all to see.

Many who are attending are thinking about swaps for the Swap Shop...it will cost £1 to swap your item, and the money will go straight to the Children's Charity. Time to sort out those spares...or to look for something you may have missed!"

Looking for something signed???  It's a good bet that there will be a few items with that famous signature...a bear or two, I'd say....but expect the unexpected too!

There will be other signatures to add to your collection as well.....a Hollywood actress from a forthcoming film set in the Lake District, a famous British chef with a restaurant in Cornwall, and a former employee of a member of the Royal Family......but what have they signed??

More to follow.....very soon!

The following has appeared on the Harrods news site today:-

TY Launch

Harrods is delighted to reveal two new Ty exclusive beanies on 4th November, Charles and Henry. Due to huge demand, customers are limited to 12 of Charles and 6 of Henry, or a single piece boxed and with a certificate.

I'll be checking this information out first thing in the morning, but I can reveal something more about the auction at the Party, which might help the avid collector!

The full auction list will be finalised tomorrow.....and each auction winner will receive a certificate signed by Mark Swallow allowing them to purchase a boxed bear without queueing the next day!!!!

Military group honors South County ‘Orphans of War’ campaign
American troops in Iraq obviously carry weapons.

But many of them also carry stuffed animals -- to soothe the fears of Iraqi children who are frightened by war and death.

In many cases, the animals are a more powerful tool in that battle-scarred country.

Many stuffed animals come from the South County-based American Health Association, which ships thousands of the little critters overseas each week as part of its “Orphans of War” campaign.

For its effort, the AHA recently received the Air Force Sergeants Association certificate of commendation.

AHA Director J. Robert Gordon received a letter from the association thanking him and the group for “your continued support of our Treats for Troops project in providing the much-loved Beanie Babies and Teddy bears.  The troops appreciate our small efforts toward making them feel that we are fully behind them.”

Accepting the award, Gordon said: “American soldiers’ lives have been saved countless times through the generous donations of hundreds of Americans – the citizen soldiers of the ‘Orphans of War’ campaign.”

The AHA ships thousands of Teddy bears, dolls and stuffed animals each week from its “Teddy bear headquarters” in Delray Beach. http://www.bocaratonnews.com/index.php?src=news&prid=17821&category=Local%20News

TY UK PARTY UPDATE
John writes: "It's already known that Harrods will be launching 2 beanies on Saturday 4th November... I can confirm that there will be another bigger friend with them!

A certain number of the beanies will be boxed and numbered, like the Shooting Stars were last year...... but how many?....we' ll have to wait and see!

However, the "Number 1" of both beanies will be auctioned on Friday night at the Ty Collectors Party...and they have both been signed by Mohammed Al Fayed, the owner of Harrods! These will be among at least 20 items in the auction, including some Ty memorabilia never seen before - a full list will be published during next week, and I will send more information when I can.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity will accept credit cards as well as cheques and cash....and I can also confirm that there will be phone lines available for bidders who are not able to attend. There have already been enquiries about this, so contact Ty UK if you want to take part!

Light refreshments and a bar will be available, and confirmation emails wil be sent to those who have registered by the end of this week - this promises to be a very special evening!!

Betty Ford Center donates to Pine Grove

The Betty Ford Center recently donated 100 Ty Beanie Babies to Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services.

In turn, Pine Grove presented the stuffed animals to Judge Bob Helfrich who will distribute them to children whose parents are involved in drug court.

Surf, Serious Art, Shoes, and the Susnar Property
TALENT TRILOGY: Montecitans are a talented bunch, so when they get together, it’s hard to find a stand out in the crowd. However, last Sunday, the multitalented Peter Clark had absolutely no competition for the title of Montecito’s Renaissance Man. In front of an invitation-only crowd of S.B. Maritime Museum patrons, and with wife Dallas leading the cheering fan club, Peter demonstrated a trilogy of considerable talents—that of musician, artist, and writer. (But don't take my word for it: check out this slideshow!)

You might recall the Clarks had the good fortune to live next door to Ty Warner, who bought their old house and tore it down to build a lake. Peter and Dallas, however, were not left high and dry. Warner, a copious collector of Channel Drive parcels, traded the Clarks one of his ocean-view Ty-tracks, along with some change for decorating. (According to museum insiders, Ty RSVP'd for the event but did not actually show.) http://www.independent.com/online_onlys/2006/10/surf_serious_art_shoes_and_the.html

2 Local Hospitals Collecting Beanie Babies For Iraqi Children
Two local hospitals are extending their care overseas. They are helping to comfort children in Iraq by sending Beanie Babies to U.S. soldiers.

Soldiers are trying to comfort the children with a little love from home.

Dixie Kirkland's office at Grandview Hospital is packed with Beanie Babies. Kirkland, who is an EMS coordinater, began collecting them after she got a request from a soldier in Iraq with whom she is pens pals.

Kirkland said, “He said they give them to children they run into as gifts, hoping to build relationships with Iraqi children."

Kirkland said not only do the loveable toys bring comfort to children, but she loves the idea of helping out.

She said, “It’s wonderful. I’d do anything for soldiers overseas. Knowing they’re helping children is wonderful.”

Close to 500 Beanie Babies have already been sent to Iraq, and employees at the hospital keep bringing more and more Beanie Babies in every day.

Susan Swisher is an emergency room nurse. She plans on bringing a whole box of the toys in.

Southview Hospital is also joining Grandview Hospital in collection the Beanie Babies. They are taking donations from the public.

If you would like to donate, you can drop them off at the emergency rooms. http://www.whiotv.com/news/9859204/detail.html

Franklin Mint acquired by private investors
The new owners of The Franklin Mint believe the collectibles maker is worth the investment.
Once the world's largest maker of collectibles, The Franklin Mint has battled changing consumer tastes. But a group of private investors see the upside of acquiring the company known for its detailed figures and models and numerous products featuring celebrities like Elvis, Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe.

"The Franklin Mint is the crown jewel of our industry," said M. Moshe Malamud, chairman of The Morgan Mint, who will hold the same title with The Franklin Mint. "It's a great opportunity to take this brand from its current status and build it up to the great name that it once was and even beyond that."

Malamud is one of a group of executives from The Morgan Mint, based in Hicksville, N.Y., who bought The Franklin Mint from Roll International Corp., a privately held firm based in Los Angeles. The new ownership group includes Hollywood producer David Salzman, who describes himself as "at times, an out-of-control collector of stuff."

The Franklin Mint also has had several legal battles over its use of celebrities.

Two years ago, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund settled with the Mint by agreeing to pay $25 million toward charitable causes. The fund sued the Mint in 1998 for selling unauthorized Princess Diana memorabilia, but lost.

Tiger Woods sued the Mint in 1997 over an unauthorized collectible. He got an undisclosed sum in a settlement.

The Mint still uses celebrity images in their products, but in recent years the focus has shifted to die-cast cars, airplanes and Harley-Davidson collectibles.

The collectibles industry had been struggling. Industry sales hit an estimated $6 billion in 2002, but that's probably been cut in half, said Pam Danziger, author of "Why People Buy Things They Don't Need."

She said the industry suffered when the 1990s Beanie Babies craze imploded. People began to lose money investing in the stuffed animals.

"It turned people off and gave them a bad taste in their mouth," she said.

But Kruger said business has been picking up as manufacturers cater to new trends and customers. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17342612&BRD=2212&PAG=461&dept_id=465812&rfi=6

Boca girl collects 2,344 beanie babies to send to children in Iraq
Hayley Crowell of Boca Raton wanted children in Iraq to feel comforted during a time of war.

So, the 11-year-old decided to collect the one thing she thought would bring peace to the children- beanie babies.

“I read in the newspaper how soldiers were giving beanie babies to kids in Baghdad. I wanted to help,” said the sixth-grade student at Don Estridge High Tech Middle School in Boca Raton.

Crowell called her project “From Boca to Baghdad.” The idea was to collect as many beanie babies as she could and then send them to Baghdad. There, U.S. troops would distribute the beanie babies to children at hospitals, schools or during encounters on the streets.

At first, Crowell’s idea wasn’t received at her prior school, Addison Mizner Elementary, where she hoped to pass out fliers and collect the beanie babies. School officials said they had already committed to previous service projects.

So, Crowell looked elsewhere and collected from neighbors and friends.

And it was a success. Crowell said many had heard about her efforts through word of mouth and a prior newspaper article published in the Boca Raton News.

She collected 2,344 beanie babies.

“People have donated them by the hundreds,” she said.

Donations came from all over, including a teacher in Wellington, a neighbor, the Humanitarian Society of Boca Raton, and even the makers of Beanie Babies, Ty Corporation.

Scott Wehrs, Chief Operating Officer for Ty Corporation, said the company wanted to help when they read an article in the Boca Raton News, the article was published April 14 and described Crowell’s efforts to collect beanie babies.

“We picked up on the story and called her parents. We thought what she was doing was something very special,” Wehrs said.

Ty Corporation sent more than 1,000 beanie babies to Crowell. Wehrs said the company had donated the product in the past to others who wanted to provide children in Iraq with comfort. http://www.bocaratonnews.com/index.php?src=news&prid=17715&category=Schools

TY UK PARTY
John writes: "Not long to wait now for the launch of the Harrod's bears on Saturday 4th November - but there's an extra this year - current UK members of the BBOC have been receiving emails  today from Ty UK inviting them to a Beanie Baby Collector's Party the night before!

This special charity event will be held at the Millennium Hotel, in Knightsbridge, London between 7pm and 10pm on Friday 3rd November and all proceeds will go to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.

During the evening there will be a charity auction, a swap shop, a beanie quiz and unique collector's Ty memorabilia...as well as the opportunity for members to meet each other informally.

The event will be limited to 200, and I know that members are already signing up to be there - it looks like it's going to be an exciting night, and a great prelude to the next day!

FEDER-BEAR BLOG UPDATE
Hello from the Windy City, where it’s—whoa, just lost my headband! I’ll be right back.

There, firmly tied back in place. Sorry about that!

Yes, I’m in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., where I was born and raised – and clearly on High Alert for storm gusts!! After my adventure in New York City and then down to Florida, I needed to meet with the wonderful folks at Ty (makers of Beanie Babies) to discuss a little business. While Roger was hanging with Vogue editor Anna Wintour at the Oscar de la Renta show talking fashion, I met with my friends at Ty to discuss my attire. Here’s a picture of me taking a break from one of our meetings on the balcony of Ty. See the great view of downtown Chicago in the distance? It’s quite beautiful.

SpongeBob Goes Pink For October
Sales of Limited Edition Beanie Babies Benefit Breast Cancer Charities
(CBS) The Early Show's special breast cancer series, "Pink for a Week," wraps up with a very special guest -- SpongeBob SquarePants.

The world famous sea sponge was on hand to introduce the all-new, limited-edition SpongeBob PinkPants Ty Beanie Baby.

The Beanie marks the first time SpongeBob is being produced in plush in a color other than yellow in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Nickelodeon and Ty will donate profits from sales of the Beanie to various breast cancer charities. Lucky audience members on the plaza received the plush Beanie Babies to take home.

The SpongeBob PinkPants Ty Beanie Baby is available online at The Nickelodeon Shop and in many retail stores while supplies last.

In addition to the Beanie Baby®, Nickelodeon has created a limited-edition t-shirt available exclusively at Nick.com. Profits from the t-shirt will also benefit breast cancer charities. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/13/earlyshow/series/pink_for_a_week/main2087922.shtml

Chicago toy inventors may brighten holidays
Ingenious items likely to spark stagnant industry, some analysts say

You can thank a Chicagoan for the ingenuity behind one of the hottest toys this holiday season.

The team of toy inventors at Lund and Company Invention LLC in Chicago created the mechanism that makes this year's T.M.X. (for "Tickle Me Extreme") Elmo laugh hysterically, slap his knee, fall to the floor and roll over.

The toy's contagious appeal is widely expected to make it a sellout this fall and lure more consumers into the toy aisles.

"It takes laughter to the extreme," said inventor Bruce Lund. "Laughter is infectious."

T.M.X. Elmo is just one of at least a dozen locally conceived products that toy experts predict will be strong sellers this season, with the potential to drive up sales in what has been a stagnant $21 billion industry.

"It's going to be a strong season," said toy consultant Chris Byrne of Byrne Communications in New York. "Parents have a lot to choose from. There is a lot of excitement at all price points."

In fact, the most elaborate toys don't always reign supreme. Consider the success of Westmont-based Ty Inc., maker of Beanie Babies and other plush. A recent Forbes magazine account pegs founder Ty Warner's personal wealth at $4.5 billion and estimates the company's annual sales at more than $400 million today. That's down considerably from annual sales estimates of $1 billion or more during the Beanie heyday of the late 1990s. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-0610140022oct14,0,5047134.story?coll=chi-business-hed

Breast cancer tie-ins give firms rosy glow
Has Breast Cancer Awareness Month degenerated into Breast Cancer Industry Month? After 26 years, some advocates are saying it's time to change the conversation.

SpongeBob Pinkpants

It used to be that orange was the color for October. But now it's pink. Breast-cancer pink.

This is the 26th Breast Cancer Awareness month. And the mantra is to buy pink -- pink vacuum cleaners, irons, spatulas and mixers. Pink tweezers, pink Tic-Tacs, pink running shoes, pink wallets and passport holders. Pink mattresses, teddy bears and, new this year, SpongeBob PinkPants.

The buy pink and pink-ribbon campaigns have been around for decades and have helped erase the stigma of a terrible disease, made mammograms routine for most women, and raised millions of dollars in research money. But many breast cancer advocates are now saying that enough is enough.

Breast Cancer Action, a California advocacy group, calls it breast cancer industry month. Buying pink, they and others warn, is as much about corporate marketing and profit as breast cancer advocacy.

"This whole pretty in pink, pink products situation is almost getting out of hand," said Chris Norton, a breast cancer survivor and president of the Minnesota Breast Cancer Coalition.

"It almost makes breast cancer seem like a pretty and pink type thing, which it isn't, especially for the 40,000 [American] women who die from it each year."

Some companies, however, do launch their campaigns with genuine, heartfelt goodwill. Take the Ty Beanie Baby creation called SpongeBob PinkPants, for example. All profits from the sale of the pink version of the iconic cartoon figure -- the eternal optimist -- will be donated to breast cancer charities. And while Viacom and Nickelodeon have done other health-related benefits and promotions, this is the first time they have devoted one of their cherished cartoon creations to one. http://www.startribune.com/1244/story/739030.html

Owner plans to sell his collectibles shop
He can't keep up with contracting job at same time
Spotting the next trend in collectibles has been part of Rich Kessel's life for more than two decades.

"Dragons were very strong, and they still hold their own. Fairies are very big. Angels are terrific," said Kessel, 57. But his days of buying figurines at trade shows across the country are done. He has reluctantly decided to sell Kessel's Collectibles & Gift Shop in Salem.

His wife, Barbara, founded the business and ran the store's day-to-day operations until her death two years ago. The business was closed for nine months after her death, then re-opened and closed last year.

"We sell memories and entertainment," Kessel said.

His advice to customers: Buy it because you like it, not because it's a collectible. He still is perplexed by the Beanie Babies collecting craze of the late 1990s, when collectors bought the stuffed toys en masse for investment purposes. (( haha.. aren't we ALL!! )) http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061013/BUSINESS/610130314/1040

Little Nell GM announces resignation
Calderon takes COO post with Ty Warner Hotels

Eric Calderon announced Tuesday that he is stepping down as general manager of the Little Nell Hotel Group, signaling the end of an era for one of Aspen Skiing Co.'s flagship properties.

Calderon said he would stay aboard for about another month before leaving to become chief operating officer of Ty Warner Hotels and Resorts.

He had served as The Little Nell's GM since 1989 when the Durant Avenue hotel opened, and his duties expanded to oversee the hospitality division of SkiCo's growing stable of properties.

"I've been thinking about this for some time and started talking with Ty Warner sometime during the summer," he said.

Calderon, 55, said the move "is definitely a step up."

Calderon will be relocating to California. There, he'll manage such Ty Warner properties as the Four Seasons New York, the Four Seasons Santa Barbara Biltmore, Kona Village Resort, Hawaii, and other resorts, private clubs and golf courses. Like SkiCo, Ty Warner is a private company.

"I found challenges every day but I think this new job will provide different opportunities," Calderon said, "and that's the primary reason I chose to do this."

Calderon said he and his partner plan to sell their Missouri Heights ranch, but also plan to acquire a second home in the Aspen area.

"I plan to be up here a lot," he said.

The California-based Ty Warner is named after its founder, who has made billions of dollars with the creation of Beanie Babies. http://www.aspendailynews.com/article_16316

PattiBuddy, FerociousPlatypus writes: I just checked the Ty Classics current list and discovered that Mr Flurries, Toasty and Presents have silently come out of retirement, just as silently as they went into it.

I have jotted in my notes that these Classics had silently retired on the following dates:

Mr Flurries (Jan 26, 2006)
Presents (Jan 26, 2006)
Toasty (May 24, 2006)

I'm not sure what exactly what day these were put back on the current list. The last time I checked the list was Sept 25, 2006 and they weren't there. So sometyme between then and Oct 8, they snuck back over there on me haha. Have a great day all and enjoy your week!

SPONGEBOB OBSERVATION
Daniel writes: "Hi, I just noticed on Ty.com that Ty has made 3 of the 4 SpongeBob PinkPants Beanies "USA Exclusives" and the last one is not listed as any exclusive. The only SpongeBob that is not an exclusive to the USA has this hang tag:
WATCHA WEARIN'?: SpongeBob typically wears a white shirt, tie and brown trousers !

IN THE PINK: Although SpongeBob usually wears white briefs underneath his pants, he's also been seen wearing blue, green, red and even pink (under his wrestling trunks) !

SUPER ABSORBENT TRIVIA: In "The Chaperone" SpongeBob dons a tuxedo when he excorts Pearl to the prom !

Just thought I would point this out. Have a nice weekend. Daniel Beanie Universe"

A message from Feder-bear Beanie Baby®
Everyone that signed up for the waiting list for Feder-bear will receive this email message:
Hello everybody!

Thanks for signing up on the Feder-bear waiting list. I’m very honored that so many of you want to share your home with me and, more importantly, that by making me part of your family, you will be contributing to the larger ATP-UNICEF community!!

As you may know, Roger is in Tokyo right now. He also says hello and thanks you for your support. He’s writing a blog on ATPtennis.com this week, and I can tell he’s having a fantastic time during his first visit to Japan! I wish I could’ve gone there with him, but I had to make a side trip to visit the nice folks over at Ty, the manufacturers of Beanie Babies®, who needed my consultation on a few bear-related things. Hopefully I’ll be back on the road shortly though, as I’m itching to travel the tour! I especially can’t wait to get to Shanghai for the Tennis Masters Cup. Roger says it’s an amazing tournament and city.

The ATP will soon be sending you the exact details in order to purchase me off the internet for $8, of which proceeds will go to UNICEF. I will be making my big debut this December in time for you all to own me for the holidays. Until then, you can read my "Feder-bear Everywhere" blog on ATPtennis.com, which I will update as soon as I get to my next exciting location!

Peace Out!!!
