Blasts from a not so distant past
ATLANTA -- Get out your Beanie Babies and your Heart of the Ocean "Titanic" pendant, your Tamagotchi and your copy of "The Celestine Prophecy," even though they've hardly had time to gather much dust.

Is it too early for '90s nostalgia, a celebration of the Mother of All Decades?

Not!

As popular culture's passing fancies pass by faster and faster, the old unofficial rule of thumb that nostalgia runs on a 20-year cycle is as passé as the Spice Girls, the Macarena or saying "Whassup?" to your friends. As ridiculous as it may seem, less than four years since Y2K paranoia ended the decade, it's bubbling up. As the "Dawson's Creek" theme song went, "I don't wanna wait," which could be the motto of '90s nostalgists. READ FULL STORY HERE

Rocking Chair Confidential
I achieved a state of enlightenment last week while in line at an Amy's Hallmark in Gresham. Debbie, a secretary from Hillsborough ascended just before me and Gina, a housewife from Clackamas rose moments after. We experienced a dissolution of the trappings of ego and receiving the clarity of universal sight and love - all for just $5. Bruce, a law clerk from Longview, made the drive at five in the morning, worried he would miss such a limited run chance for illumination, and was actually first in line for the transformation. And it was tax free, he joked, looking beatific. I love that about Oregon.

The Ty Corporation released the official Dalai Lama Beanie Baby this past week in celebration of His Holiness's recent stateside visit and book tour. The five inch stuffed kangaroo rat named, Cetasika is made of a batik cloth to resemble Tibetan Prayer flags and each one is personally blessed by the Dalai Lama, guaranteeing enlightenment and almost doubling its resale value. They're in a very limited release of just two hundred and fifty per state and are undoubtedly going to be one of the most sought-after pieces of plush religious iconography of the last couple of years. Oh, and did I mention, I've got one. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

INFO BEANIE HINTS? STATE/COUNTRY FLAGS?
I wonder if Ty will be coming out with state and country flagged Beanies. After reading the Info Beanie entries, that was my first thought.
Sunday September 28,2003 07:53 p.m.
It took all day, but we are finally done making all the state flags. I think that I have blisters from drawing and coloring so much. Needless to say, we all learned a lot the last two days about the different flags of the world and the United States. I'm going to get ready for bed, talk to you later!

Sunday September 28,2003 01:02 p.m.
Well...we are half way there. 25 state flag are done...just 25 more to go. I think some of these flags are a little harder to make then the flags we made yesterday. A lot of them have big words on them and little pictures that we have to draw. I better get back and help the others!

Sunday September 28,2003 08:44 a.m.
Good morning! We have all of our country flags hung up on one wall of the nursery. We thought that on the opposite wall, we would make different flags. We thought we would make the flags for each of the United States. We better get started'we have 50 flags to make today!

Carey family moves girls' memorial to grave
HOPKINTON - The flower and balloon-adorned memorial to Violet and Iris Carey, two young girls killed in the explosion at 65 Main St. last year, has been moved by the family to the children's grave.

Cindy Germain, grandmother to the two girls, said they moved the collection of flowers, pictures, beanie babies and balloons to the family gravesite at Mt. Vernon Grove Cemetery two weeks ago at the request of the owner of 65 Main Street, Leonard Pearson.

"We were told to move it and we were very upset about it," Germain said.

This is the second time the memorial has moved from the site. The first time, last August, the items creating the makeshift memorial were unceremoniously and anonymously dumped in the trash. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

The Flag Is Still There
Well, the Yankees and Mike Mussina were spanked pretty badly by the Chisox in the Windy City yesterday in a game that was going the Yanks' way until everything fell apart in the sixth. I don't know though. The loss doesn't bother me too much.

But if a Stadium visit is not all about seeing the great players on today's team, it's not always about seeing old friends like Philippa, Al, Clara, and Tonique (or Frank the trumpet guy or David the funky guitar player down River Ave. after the games) either. I was privileged to bask in the wide-eyed wonder of my niece's son Michael back in July at a win over Boston in his first game in Yankee Stadium, and we experienced some of that joy on the 14th too. Christopher, perhaps six, was enjoying his Yankee premier in the row in front of us, and he had a ball, so to speak. The game was competitive, the drinks and treats were tasty, and the Beanie Buddy was cool. (Although this may be a harbinger of things. Upwards of 50,000 fans packed the Stadium in '98 to see the Twins on the first Beanie Baby Day when Boomer threw his perfecto; 10,000 fewer attended this day.) Christopher loved that we all were encouraged to (and did) make as much noise as we could, and when a foul ball off Derek Jeter's bat in the third plopped into the hands of a fan one row in front of him and two seats to the right, another lifelong Yankee fan was born. Yet...it's also easy to see that people do a lot of nutty things, and usually do so in groups. They wear leg warmers, wide neckties, then narrow neckties. Long skirts, short skirts. No skirts. Paisley. They ride roller skates, then scooters. They buy Pet Rocks, collectible Beanie Babies, and stocks of dot-com companies with no profits and no business plan. They ingest odd substances, and subscribe to odd belief systems. They also fight wars, and blow up themselves and others. VIEW STORY HERE

Do Not Call Registry not dead yet
Charlene shares the following:
Consumer groups say Tuesday’s federal court ruling that blocks the Do Not Call Registry is just a temporary legal setback, and won’t ultimately stop government agencies from preventing most dinner-time telephone interruptions. A U.S. judge has ruled that the Federal Trade Commission overstepped its authority in creating the national do-not-call list against telemarketers. The FTC asked a court to stay its decision while it appeals the ruling.

IN A LAST-MINUTE reprieve for telemarketers, U.S. District Judge Lee R. West granted a motion for summary judgment requested by the telemarketing industry that — for now — stops implementation of the Federal Trade Commission’s do-not-call list. Some 50 million phone numbers are registered on the list, which was to take effect Oct. 1. The telemarketing industry claims the list would cost $50 billion in sales if member firms were prevented from calling all of the telephone numbers. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

BBOC word search = clues to new Beanies?
Marc writes: "
I received my BBOC newsletter on Tuesday and there was something that caught my eye. There's a word search and it asks the following.

Can you see what I see? Is there something special hiding in this puzzle?

Well, that "challenge" led me to look for the hidden items NOT on the list of words to find.

I discovered the following in the puzzle.

BEAR - diagonal starting at first box, upper left
CURE
- 1st row, to the right
POPCORN
- 1st column, vertical, 4th letter up from the bottom
RUDY
- 10th row, 3rd letter from the left
SNOWDRIFT
- last column, 3rd letter from the top, diagonal

I wonder if I'm the first to spot this? Maybe I'll win these products signed by Ty for being the first? ;) Marc"

Three toy stories to inspire you
Most of us have come up with an idea for a new toy or game at one time or another. But how many actually go ahead and really make their invention work?

The most recent overnight billionaire in the toy industry is the reclusive H Ty Warner. He is the brains behind Beanie Babies, the plush bean-bag toy animals, and is reputed to be among the 30 richest individuals in the USA, with Forbes magazine estimating his net worth at $4.5bn.

His privately-held business, Ty Inc, has earned $700m in profits in a single year - far more than the two largest public toy companies, Hasbro and Mattel, combined.

He sells his products through gift shops rather than major chain retailers, like Toys R Us. He started the business at the age of 42 in 1986 - with a $50,000 inheritance from his father's estate - based on his 18 years of experience marketing plush toys for another firm.

In 1996 he struck gold when he launched a line of small, $5 animals that are collectable. Sales rocketed and Beanie Babies became a marketing phenomenon. The early characters have become collector's items and can sell for hundreds of dollars.

And like most toy products, Beanie Babies are very high margin indeed. They are made in the Far East and offer shops an excellent bottom-line contribution. Although their popularity has probably peaked, they remain a highly profitable business. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

SEARCHING FOR NEWS...
Well I've been searching for news for the last TWO hours and have found very little. The story below has a mere mention of a Beanie Baby but more importantly serves as a reminder. I hope you will take the time to read it. :oD

FIRST DAY OF FALL
YES!! My favorite time of year is officially here! :oD I found some interesting information about the change of seasons that I wanted to share.

Seasons except FALL have their first days on the 21st; why is Fall DIFFERENT? It must have to do with months having 31 days within season, and February being a short month? Yet, summer does not seem affected by that. Our year being 365 days, each season has 91 + days to it, right? If summer begins June 21, 91 days more brings us to? Let's see: 9 for June (start it as of June 22nd, full day), 31 for July, 31 for August, what remains to get 91 coming to - 20, inclusive. Shouldn't the first day of Fall be September 21st? Let's look at the OTHER seasons, being 91 days?

Winter - December 21 (as of the 22nd 1st full day) to March 21 - 90 days
Spring - March 21 (as of the 22nd 1st full day) to June 21 - 92 days
Summer - June 21 (as of the 22nd 1st full day) to what YOU say first day of Fall is September 23rd (inclusive?) - 94 days. WHY DOES SUMMER HAVE THE MOST DAYS TO ITS SEASON? Should not Fall begin on September 20th or 21st?
Fall - September 23rd (by what you say and the 24th last full day) to December 21st - 89 (Why is FALL the SHORTEST?)

Winter - 90 days
Spring - 92 days
Summer - 94 days
Fall - 89 days

Why is it not all the seasons have 91+ days each (equal)? The crossing of the sun at the equator for winter and summer determining the two equinox? Is there somehow a slight imperfection of the earth's speed in its orbit or its somewhat varying distance to the sun at various points in its orbit that cause these very slight differences in the number of days to each season?

Adding up to 365. Somewhere we do figure in the extra quarter day, right! I'm no scientist, so you tell me!

A runner, a rock and a rescue
On a warm afternoon eight days ago, on the golf course of Bowling Green University, the lives of a 21-year-old female cross-country runner and a 36-year-old coach from a rival school intersected. The result was one saved life, two changed people and a week overflowing with hugs and tears, disbelief and relief. Here is their story:

The Runner
Jamie Luketic is a small-town person with a little girl's voice, high-pitched and sweet. She talks how she is. "She's definitely one of the happiest, kindest people I've ever met," says Abby Cominsky, Luketic's teammate on the Baldwin-Wallace College women's cross country team.

"I am not a big risk taker at all," Luketic says. "That's one of the first things I thought of after everything happened. I run because it's a safe sport."

Her dorm room is her sanctuary. It's where she has her purple Beanie Baby, and a desk full of photos of family and friends, and a verse given to her by her coach at Rootstown High, Larry Bailey. It reads: VIEW FULL STORY HERE

<my comments: This story makes you realize, as if you didn't before, just how quickly life can change. All it takes is one tiny little thing to happen to take your life away or change it forever emotionally or physically.>

NEW COMPETITIONS
Daphne writes: "Hello Your readers may be interested in a totally informal competition that we've just started ... with Sparks, the as-yet-unannounced UK exclusive bear as the prize.  I'm hoping that Sparks can be won by someone who wouldn't normally have the chance to own one

It can be found on the Forum at www.bearsandbeans.com under 'Competitions'

People can enter daily until 3 October.  To be entered in the draw, there's a simple question that they have to answer - what would they do for Sparks?  It can be as silly or sensible as you like, but there's no catch and we shan't be making people perform whatever they say they'd do ... however tempting that may be!

Also due to be launched next week is a signed GB Chubbley competition.  GB is the latest UK exclusive bear from Chubbley Ltd and the prize has been signed by Darren Barker, the designer.  This is a fun competition again, with entrants having to come up with an alternative meaning for 'GB'!

Earnings: The artfully conceived product of scoundrels
"Once Again, Stock Market Success to Depend on Earnings," reads a recent headline in the Post-Gazette. And of course, the rise and fall of the stock market has a tremendous impact on the economy, not to mention who will win the next presidential election. But what exactly are those "earnings," that everything seems to depend on? If you would like to know the scoop -- and the sordid details that lie behind it -- this book will educate and alarm you.

After watching in disbelief as his 4th grader sold two Beanie Babies for over $100, Owen discovered that eBay is a terrific home laboratory for economics. Over the years (when he admits that they became occasionally "deranged") he and his son learned a lot about "psychology, marketing, advertising, cost control, responsibility, trust, duplicity, skepticism, irrational exuberance, and idiocy -- all valuable economic lessons." Annie's Bag O Bones A plastics factory owner enters the yard-ornament market
MANATEE COUNTY -- Lee Anne Mansfield was driving through southern Indiana en route to visit a sick relative when she noticed a figure made entirely of terra-cotta garden pots, sitting by the side of the road.

She slammed on the brakes to take a closer look at the 4-foot-tall garden ornament with a potted fern protruding from its head.
Borrowing a marketing trick from the Beanie Baby craze, Mansfield is including paperwork in her kits that allow customers to register clay pot people online or by mail. She said her Web site, www.claypotpeople.com, will eventually track the size of the clay pot people population and list names on a family tree. VIEW PIC & FULL STORY HERE

SERIES 3 OUT NOW
Twelve new "little one" have joined the flock in the Series I Countin' Sheep collection.
Also announced that there is a US and Canadian Distributor. There has been problems with supplying stock into the US marketplace. The stock was manufactured originally for the UK requirements and shipping to the US states all plush items imported must have a new label sewn in with a PA number. Canadian distributor has been allowed to tag products with this number and are awaiting now to see if this can be done for the US. If this is possible, stock will be shipped to the US distributor. However, Kansas Brass & Pewter will be obtaining Countin' Sheep from an UK retailer until this problem is solved. Have a great "feeling of Fall in the air" upcoming week. One baby's story has happy ending
Mia Gillian was born eight weeks early to a drug-addicted mother who quietly left the Phoenix hospital and disappeared, abandoning the child to the state's care.

Two months later, Anndreah Robertson was born at a hospital a few miles away with crack cocaine coursing through her body, too.

At 3 1/2 weeks old, Mia went to live with Karen and Michael Gillian. Photographs of Mia's first weeks with the Gillians show her about the size of a Beanie Baby. For months, she suffered tremors and had trouble latching onto a bottle. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Oak Brook relents, OKs Warner's new gates
Beanie Baby entrepreneur Ty Warner's house may be shielded from view from his Oak Brook street, but now unwanted visitors will not be able to come onto his property.

The Oak Brook Village Board concurred with approving a variation Sept. 9 to allow Warner to install driveway gates at his Ginger Creek home. A final vote is expected Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The Zoning Board of Appeals recommended approval of the gates as long as Warner agreed to remove the gates if he sold the house or moved from the property. In addition, the existing dense landscaping must be maintained in its current condition and emergency manual override devices must be installed.

The home is shielded by large white pines, making it nearly impossible to see the home while driving by. Plans also include landscaping the gates as well as painting them dark green to blend in with the environment. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

10 interns 'break in' carrier: USS Ronald Reagan commissioned
The interns were quartered in staterooms in "officers' country" and ate in both the officers wardroom and the enlisted mess.

"We felt great [about being in the officer's accommodations] until we saw enlisted quarters, then felt guilty," Cavano said. "I was pleasantly surprised - the food in the wardroom was very good. Some of us became particularly fond of the Ben & Jerry's ice cream bars. Then when we went down to the enlisted mess we felt guilty again."

"I definitely was surprised by the quality of [of the food] - very good," Moore said.

All 10 interns were made "honorary Sailors," and got their share of souvenirs - hats, shirts, coffee mugs, and USS Reagan Beanie Babies - from the ship's gift shop, she said.

For five years now, NAVAIR's Logistics department has been sponsoring field trips for its acquisitions logistics interns to visit a Navy ship for a few days to help them get a grasp on how their logistics work fits in to the "big picture." And so to do that, they have always chosen a big ship, an aircraft carrier. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Father of teen killed in Memorial Day Weekend accident wants memorial back
DAVENPORT - It was Memorial Day Weekend when a drunk driver got on to the wrong side of Interstate  280 in Iowa. John Gamble, 42, drove his truck into a car driven by Marie Severe, 17. Both drivers died.

A roadside memorial has disappeared, and friends and family want some answers.

Jim Severe knows there is no real monetary value in what was taken--strictly sentinmental—but he is appealing to the public to help him get the memorial back.

“What's going through my mind is, how could anyone do this?''

It was along interstate 280 where Marie Severe took her last breath last May. In a sad, strange way, the site is sacred to her parents and friends. That’s why they're shocked someone would trash the makeshift memorial to Marie.

''A neighbor called yesterday morning and said, ‘It’s all gone.’''

Now, there are empty spots where a new custom-made cross stood. Stripped of the stuffed animals and momentos left since May. All that’s left is a lone beanie baby and plastic bouquet.

The 'cool down' revolution

I RECENTLY was speaking with a childhood friend with whom I went to elementary school about 30 years ago. I was trying to persuade him to come to our class reunion, but he wasn't buying it. He complained about the bullying of those years.

It's true, bullies ruled in our era, but things have changed since we played in schoolyards and backyards, resolving conflicts by the power of the fist. Children and how we bring them up are not the same. It may not be very noticeable to us, but I bet that 200 years from now social historians will look back at a revolution unfolding.

It was over, conflict processed and duly noted. They began throwing Beanie Babies at one another in a fun-filled, healing free-for-all.

Let me assure you that when my friend from elementary school and I were growing up, I never saw two children resolve a conflict like this. I didn't see any grownups doing it, either. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Soldiers host day of fun for Iraqi orphans
While Fort Campbell soldiers are deployed to the Middle East, The Leaf-Chronicle will provide periodic updates of troops' activities as available from U.S. Central Command and other sources.

Soldiers with the 101st Airborne Division and the 431st Civil Affairs Battalion on Sept. 1 gave a group of Iraqi orphans a day filled with fun and games at the Civil Military Operations Center.

Each child received a gift bag when it was time for them to leave.

The bag contained items such as a T-shirt with the 101st insignia, a beanie baby, a soccer ball and personal hygiene items, Wade said.

"It's like an ultimate high, hard to explain," Wade said. "Seeing the smiles on the children's faces made every bit of work worth it." VIEW FULL STORY HERE

FIZZ & TOAST SHELF SITTING?
Nancy writes:
"I went into my local Hallmark at the mall yesterday and there were bunches of Fizz and Toast sitting on the shelf.   None of the September releases yet, however.  The salesgirl told me to "buy as many as I wanted."  I remember the old days when it was their policy of "one bear per family" and people were lined up outside the store for an hour before it opened.   I did find Fizz and Bubbly earlier this summer, but there were no extra Bubblys to be seen yesterday.  This was the first time I'd seen Toast anywhere in town. Nancy - Eastern Washington"

SUGGESTION AS WHERE TO FIND SHOW BEARS

Vicky writes: "Dear Lisa, I finally found Toast last night in Topeka, Kansas!  I now have all three!  So excited to be able to complete all the show Beanies!  I also have Bravo so now I am waiting for the September releases!  Can hardly wait! Vicky"

Thanks! Diana"

NO SIGN OF BUBBLY & TOAST

Maui woman who kept 96 pets gets 30 days in jail
WAILUKU, Maui — Marilyn Jean Bermudez owned 96 dogs and cats and had a name for every one of them.

She limited her work hours at a neighborhood store so she could spend more time caring for the animals at her modest three-bedroom Ha'iku home, and used her entire paycheck to buy pet food, even if it meant going without meals herself.

While some people collect Beanie Babies, coins or stamps, Loo said it was obvious Bermudez was "addicted to collecting animals."

"Sometimes, when a person loves too much, love turns to obsession" and ultimately tragedy, the judge said. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

7-year-old starts Internet business
HOLMDEL — Even in a lagging economy, one township second-grader found a way to make money this summer.

Jessica Ling, 7, who is entering second grade at Village School, created a successful Internet business with the help of her mother, Barbara.

"I decided that I wanted to earn money," Jessica said.

Her first idea was to sell pictures on her street corner that she drew, she said. Her mother then came up with an alternative business that would work better.

Jessica and her mother thought about starting a CD-ROM directory of all the businesses in Holmdel, Barbara said.

Barbara wanted her daughter to start this type of business because "Jessica was a bit shy. This way she had to go and talk to people," she said.

Jessica was very excited to have earned $100 over her summer vacation. She said she would spend most of the money on books and her collection of Beanie Babies. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Don't ditch that shirt Britney, bare's a bore
LOS ANGELES: A simple cotton T-shirt is threatening to end a fashion craze that has bared midriffs around the world and revealed parts of the human anatomy that, for some people, are best kept covered.

Across southern California, the home of the belly-baring micro-tee popularised by pop diva Britney Spears and her teeny-bopper clones, the tiny tank top has given way to a long shirted, layered look invented by two 30-something pals. Their quest for the perfect tee led Cheyann Benedict and Claire Stansfield to start C & C California and unwittingly launched a fashion revolt against the all-too-public bare belly button.

“People are sick of the bare midriff thing,” Pam Cohen, owner of a Tony Manhattan Beach, California, boutique, said as she rung up a 50-ish customer who bought $500 worth of C & C T-shirts. “Britney Spears is over. Layering is in.”

Jamie Rosenthal, owner of the hip Hollywood boutique Lost & Found, where actresses Jennifer Aniston and Catherine Keener bought their C & C tees, has got “hundreds” of calls for the shirts and compared their popularity to the Beanie Baby craze. VIEW FULL STORY HERE

Judie writes: "I like getting my news emails from you, but since it is more work on you to send them out, I don't see why we can't go to the newspage to see what is up if the news is slow that day. However, then you might get letters from people who do not receive their emails telling you there is a problem with the list server...LOL Have a good day!!! Judie"

Becky writes: "Hi Lisa ..... I would understand if you only sent the newsletter when there IS news :-) No need for you to dig through the internet to try to come up with news. I go to your site on average once a week  :-) More than I go to the TY site  ! Once again ,  Many thanks for ALL your work ! Becky"

Maria writes: "Hello Lisa, While I love to receive your newsletter, I also visit your news page everyday....most days more than once. If it is a slow news day, it would be fine by me if you skipped sending a daily news letter. Every other day would be OK with me. More than that and we would start to worry if YOU where OK :0) Maria in Illinois"

Daphne writes: "hi lisa although i enjoy hearing your news everyday i think it would be easier on you to just put it in your news and let us read it and then if something important comes up like new beanies or something like that then send to our email addresses so we will know immediately. thanks lisa. Daphne :)

Patti writes: "Hi Lisa, I just finished reading my daily newsletter and thought I'd respond to your question about whether I preferred getting the newsletter or if I went to the planetbeans website to read it.  I prefer getting my newsletter sent, even though I've stopped collecting beanies I still enjoy reading about what is happening.  I find life is so hectic at times that I don't visit the sites I want to often enough, but I always make a point of checking and reading my email. Enjoy your week. Hugs, Patti"

Pat writes: "I would prefer you do send the newsletter out even if the news is slow. You always seem to add an article or two worth reading. I look forward to receiving the newsletter as you keep us on our toes with the news! Great job! Thank You, Pat R"

Lynne writes: "Hi Lisa,   I for one really look forward to getting the newsletter each day, even if there isn't much news. Lynne"

Connie writes: "Hi Lisa, i look forward to receiving your newsletter and any updates that happen during the day in my inbox!! You do a GREAT job! Thanks a BUNCH! Connie"

Marge writes: "Dear Lisa, I enjoy hearing from you all the time, slow news or not...thanks...Marge"

<my comments: I appreciate hearing from my readers and I'd like to thank those of you that took the time to write with your comments. It's getting a bit ridiculous searching hours for news and coming up empty handed. I have no help searching for news other than the occasional article or story a reader may send in. Some of the other sites have people searching for news items.  I have the pressure on me, myself, and I to do my best to locate something people will enjoy or look forward to reading. It's a job and sometimes not a fun one! LOL The consensus from most people is that they'd prefer to have me continue the daily newsletters. I will do my best to continue sending daily but I may take a break so if you don't receive your newsletter you will know where to go to keep updated on the news (http://www.planetbeans.com/news.htm). Keep in mind that it's just as easy to click on the link to view the news on this page as it is for me to do the news here and again on a newsletter. It may, however, be more convenient to receive the news in your inbox.>

BUBBLY A SHELF SITTER?
SHeL writes in response to the lack of Toast in California: "Hi Lisa, This is NOT true !!! Bubbly is sitting on store shelves all over San Diego. Fizz has come and gone. There is not a trace of Toast in San Diego as of Sunday afternoon !!! Have a great day. SHeL
