SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE
Note: I have verified this information and it is true. Dr. Phil's show also had information about this growing problem with our youth on a show this week. Please, please, pass this on to everyone you know that has children or grandchildren.

If you have children  or grandchildren, PLEASE read this officer's story Carefully. You can also verify the story at  http://www.snopes.com/toxins/dustoff.asp  Dust Off (or a variant of the product) is available everywhere there's a computer.

First I'm going to tell you a little about me and my family. My name is Jeff. I am a Police Officer for a city which is known nationwide for its crime rate. We have a lot of gangs and drugs. At one point we were # 2 in the nation in homicides per capita. I also have a police K-9 named Thor.

He was certified in drugs and general duty. He retired at 3 years old because he was shot in the line of duty. He lives with us now and I still train with him because he likes it. I always liked the fact that there was no way to bring drugs into my house. Thor wouldn't allow it. He would tell on you.
The reason I say this is so you understand that I know about drugs. I have taught in schools about drugs. My wife asks all our kids at least once a week if they used any drugs. Makes them promise they wont.

I like building computers occasionally and started building a new one in February 2005. I also was working on some of my older computers. They were full of dust so on one of my trips to the computer store I bought a 3 pack of DUST OFF. Dust Off is a can of compressed air to blow dust off a computer. A few weeks later when I went to use one of them they were all used. I talked to my kids and my two sons both said they had used them on their computer and messing around with them. I yelled at them for wasting the 10 dollars I paid for them. On February 28 I went back to the computer store. They didn't have the 3 pack which I had bought on sale so I bought a single jumbo can of Dust Off. I went home and set it down beside my computer.

On March 1st, I left for work at 10 PM.  Just before midnight my  wife went down and kissed Kyle goodnight. At 5:30 am the  next morning Kathy went downstairs to wake Kyle up for school, before she left for work. He was propped up in bed with his legs crossed and his head leaning over. She called to him a few times to get up. He didn't move. He would sometimes tease her like this and pretend he fell back asleep. He was never easy to get up. She went in and shook his arm. He fell over. He was pale white and had the straw from the Dust Off can coming out of his mouth. He had the new can of Dust Off in his hands. Kyle was dead.

I am a police officer and I had never heard of this. My wife is a nurse and she had never heard of this. We later found out from the coroner, after the autopsy, that only the propellant from the can of Dust off was in his system. No other drugs. Kyle had died between midnight and 1 AM. I found out that using Dust Off is being done mostly by kids ages 9 through 15. They even have a name for it. It's called dusting. A take off from the Dust Off name. It gives them a slight high for about 10 seconds. It makes them dizzy.

A boy who lives down the street from us showed Kyle how to do this about a month before. Kyle showed his best friend. Told him it was cool and it couldn't hurt you. Its just compressed air. It can't hurt you. His best friend said no.

Kyle was wrong. It's not just compressed air. It also contains a propellant called R2. Its a refrigerant like what is used in your refrigerator. It is a heavy gas. Heavier than air. When you inhale it, it fills your lungs and keeps the good air, with oxygen, out. That's why you feel dizzy, buzzed. It decreases the oxygen to your brain, to your heart. Kyle was right. It can't hurt you. IT KILLS YOU. The horrible part about this is there is no warning. There is no level that kills you. It's not cumulative or an overdose; it can just go randomly, terribly wrong. Roll the dice and if your number comes up you die. IT'S NOT AN OVERDOSE. It's Russian Roulette. You don't die later. Or not feel good and say I've had too much. You usually die as you're breathing it in. If not, you die within 2 seconds of finishing "the  hit." That's why the straw was still in Kyle's mouth when he died. Why his eyes were still open.

The experts want to call this huffing. The kids don't believe it's huffing. As adults we tend to lump many things together. But it doesn't fit here. And that's why it's more accepted. There is no chemical reaction. no strong odor. It doesn't follow the huffing signals. Kyle complained a few days before he died of his tongue hurting. It probably did. The propellant causes frostbite. If I had only known.

It's easy to say hey, it's my life and I'll do what I want. But it isn't. Others are always effected. This has forever changed our family's life. I have a hole in my heart and soul that can never be fixed. The pain is so immense I can't describe it. There's nowhere to run from it. I cry all the time and I don't ever cry. I do what I'm supposed to do but I don't really care. My kids are messed up. One won't talk about it. The other will only sleep in our room at night. And my wife, I can't even describe how bad she is taking this. I thought we were safe because of Thor. I thought we were safe because we knew about drugs and talked to our kids about them.

After Kyle died another story came out. A Probation Officer went to the school system next to ours to speak with a student. While there he found a student using Dust Off in the bathroom. This student told him about another student who also had some in his locker. This is a rather affluent school system. They will tell you they don't have a drug problem there. They don't even have a dare or plus program there. So rather than tell everyone about this "new" way of getting high they found, they hid it. The  probation officer told the media after Kyle's death and they, the school, then admitted to it. I know that if they would have told the media and I had heard, it wouldn't have been in my house.

We need to get this out of our homes and school computer labs. Using Dust Off isn't new and some "professionals" do know about. It just isn't  talked about much, except by the kids. They all seem to know about it.

April 2nd was 1 month since Kyle died. April 5th would have been his 15th birthday. And every weekday I catch myself sitting on the living room couch at 2:30 in the afternoon and waiting to see him get off the bus. I know Kyle is in heaven but I can't help but wonder if I died and went to Hell.

GIZMO ON 'INVASION'
Marc writes: "On last night's (Wed., 9/28) episode of Invasion (ABC), around 5 minutes or so before the end of the episode, I think Gizmo appeared as Rose was getting ready for bed. No hangtag visible (looked like it was removed), but I'm pretty sure Gizmo was there. If anyone else wants to check it out, I think ABC is repeating both of the first two shows (this and last week's) on Sat., 10/1 from 8:00-10:00 P.M. Eastern. If you just want to check for Gizmo, tune in around 10 minutes before the end. Marc"

How Four eBay Stars Got Started
An idea, a need, a passion, a calling--everyone has a reason for starting a business on eBay. Here are 4 entrepreneurs' stories.
Lynn Dralle got her start on eBay the way many people did in the late 1990s--she was searching for Beanie Babies to buy.

For those who are too young to remember, or for those whose pop-culture memories are fuzzy, this was a decade in which tiny, furry stuffed animals created by Ty Inc. were decreed collectible items because of their limited availability and short manufacturing lives. It was an age in which otherwise rational people were suddenly buying the stuffed animals by the dozen and occasionally paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for an individual stuffed Beanie Baby, certain they would recoup their investments tenfold. It was an age of Beanie Baby magazines, books and collectors' cases.

"They will come back again," the Palm Desert, California, entrepreneur says confidently, citing a Beanie Baby she recently saw on eBay with a bid of $1,150.

Whether Beanie Babies will be as good an investment as old coins or comic books remains to be seen, but in that period, they were a profitable venture for entrepreneurs like Dralle, who bought Beanie Babies on eBay to sell as future collectibles in her grandmother's antiques store. The experience went so well, she couldn't help but start shopping on eBay for herself. "My grandmother bought me a vase when I was 13, and I had never found another piece like it," explains Dralle, 42. "Now, I have 13 of those vases, and every time I buy one, it reminds me of my grandmother." VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

National 4-H Council and Ty Inc. Unite in Donating 4-H Beanie Babies for Youth Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
National 4-H Council and Ty, Inc., creators of the popular Beanie Babies, have united in an effort to provide 4-H Bears to youth left homeless in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

(PRWEB) September 28, 2005 -- National 4-H Council and Ty, Inc. will distribute a total of 2,000 4-H Beanie Babies Bears as a part of 4-H relief activity kits that will also include t-shirts and other essentials for the youthful victims of the recent disaster that has devastated parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

"Hurricane Katrina has resulted in pain, fear and uncertainty in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people" said Ed Gershon, SVP of Merchandising at National 4-H Council. "The 4-H bears that our friends at Ty Inc. have produced have already brought happiness to thousands within our 4-H community.”

“Now it is our hope that these little bears can, in some small way, help lift the spirits of some of the youth whose lives were shattered by the storm and its tragic aftermath," said Scott Wehrs, Vice President of Strategic Development of Ty Inc. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

A DAY FOR CHARITY : Staying the course
Todd Hamilton could have taken the sensible route to pursuing a PGA Tour career.

He could have stayed in the United States playing the various minitours, attempting to make the big leagues by finishing in the top 20 on the Nationwide Tour.

And where would he be now? "I guess I’d be working in a pro shop somewhere, ’’ said Hamilton, in Little Rock Monday as one of the headliners for the annual A Day For Charity Pro-Am at Pleasant Valley Country Club." Gosh, good question. I really have no idea what I’d be doing. ’’

Hamilton has eschewed any hint of being a "jerk ’’ since winning the British Open. Not only is he regarded as one of the more likable players on tour, he refused to take the $3,000 appearance fee given to fellow Tour players by Glen Day to appear in his pro-am.

On a whim at a pairings party for the event Sunday night, Hamilton purchased 41 Beanie Babies at $50 each to benefit the First Tee of Arkansas." My daughters [Christina and Whitney] came running up so excited saying that Mr. Hamilton had purchased all the remaining Beanie Babies, ’’ said Jennifer Day, who is Glen’s wife and the pro-am tournament director. "Todd’s just a super guy, he’s really down to earth and everybody likes him. ’’ VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

The Beanie Baby expert:
These cute creatures have turned the world of collectibles upside down. At the epicenter: Mary Beth's Beanie World magazine.
Like King Solomon, Mary Beth Sobolewski can offer sage advice to those fighting over a baby. Again and again, the founder of Mary Beth's Beanie World magazine has heard about divorcing couples bickering over Beanie Babies. "You don't want to split them in half," counsels Sobolewski, 39. "All you'll be left with is a sack of beans and no value. Go through a price guide and split them up equitably."

At a time when a collection of all 212 Beanies is valued at $95,000 or so - though each retails for $5 to $7 - this is no small issue. Sobolewski, a mother of four and a former IBM engineer, was a passionate collector whose prowess as an Internet Beanie trader led her last year to create her publication. It's now a slick 250-page monthly with a circulation of 1 million, the biggest of several Beanie-themed magazines. VIEW FULL ARTICLE & PHOTO HERE

The article is really from November 29, 1998. Makes for some interesting reading. There is even a note on how you can contact Mary Beth to have any of your Beanie questions answered. LOL >>

Community comes out for theater fund-raiser
SAYRE - The celebrities of movies and television may have been absent for a fund-raiser at the Sayre Theatre, but the celebrities of the local community showed up in full force to raise money to complete the renovation of the theater.

At the same time, donations for the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita were also accepted throughout the day.

While the final tally's weren't yet in this weekend, theater officials hoped to raise at least $10,000 to be used to add chandeliers to the inside of the theater.

Three auctions in the courtyard outside, featuring Beanie Babies, posters and other memorabilia signed by celebrities, attracted a crowd. Some of the more expensive bids were for Beanie Babies signed by astronaut John Glenn, which sold for $100, and former president George H. W. Bush, which sold for $115. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Perdue Asks Schools to Cancel Classes

Hurricane Rita Prompts Request
ATLANTA -- Gov. Sonny Perdue has asked public schools around the state to cancel classes on Monday and Tuesday of next week, an effort to conserve gasoline supplies.

Perdue held a news conference at 4 p.m. where he announced the plan. The request was not mandatory and it was not clear what districts will comply with the request.

However, officials at Atlanta and DeKalb public schools said they will honor the governor's request.

The move comes amid fears that Hurricane Rita, expected to wash ashore this weekend along the Texas coast, where many of the country's oil refinery plants are located, could put a crimp in the nation's oil production.

As part of the governor's plan to conserve fuel around the state, he urged residents to stay calm and not top off their tanks. Perdue also said he has issued an executive order that cancels state travel and asks workers to work from home.

"If all Georgians work together to reduce our demand for fuel over the next couple of weeks, we will have enough market power together to hold prices down," he said. "All together we can influence demand over our state.

" As part of Perdue's plan, he asked school districts to allow students to use two inclimate weather days. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE http://www.wsbtv.com/education/5013041/detail.html

New Knoxville family collects toys for Iraqi children
NEW KNOXVILLE — Meredith Eshelman had a hundred of potential smiles in her bed-room, and she never even knew it.
Eshelman donated those potential smiles, in the form of Beanie Babies, to Operation Desert Toylift, a plan organized by Auglaize County residents to deliver toys to children in Iraq.
“It was really surprising when I saw how many Beanie Babies I had,” said Meredith Eshel-man, a junior at New Knoxville High School. “I didn’t realize I had so many. They were just sitting there and doing nothing, so why not use them to bring a smile to their faces?” VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Stuffed animals to bring comfort
Fifth-graders collect for young Katrina victims
LA VERGNE — Roy Waldron Elementary students knew to bring money for Hurricane Katrina victims, but four fifth-grade girls wanted to add a personal touch for children.

"We decided to do teddy bears," fifth-grader Melissa Tyson explained. "We knew how bad it would feel to lose something special to you."

Melissa and peers Lindsay Ruhter, Erica King and Morgan Winfrey pushed a cart from classroom to classroom daily to collect teddy bears and other stuffed animals from peers at the school serving grades 3-5.

By the end of a week, the girls had gathered more than 700, and the huge stuffed-animal pile included Pooh Bear, Tele Tubbies, Beanie Babies, bunnies, bugs, dogs, a chicken and many other animated characters.

"We thought it wouldn't be fair for all the kids of New Orleans to not have fun, and we're just over here having all the fun," Morgan said.

Roy Waldron Elementary is among the 38 Rutherford County Schools and 11 Murfreesboro City Schools here responding to the needs of Hurricane Katrina victims. VIEW FULL ARTICLE & PHOTO HERE

1,013 backpacks leave for Houston
TOWNSEND -- Thanks to one mother and son team, 1,013 backpacks for displaced Hurricane Katrina students are en route to a Houston, Texas, school district for distribution.

Ellynmarie Theep and her teenage son, Will Stankiewicz, followed through on a brain child idea from their kitchen to organize as many parents and students as possible.

"The outpouring was unreal," said Theep.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, a Ryder Truck was loaded up with over 50 cartons of school supplies, socks, underwear, Beanie Babies, crayons and anything else people donated to help out an already overly stretched school district that has opened its doors to Louisiana students. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

In many forms, security blankets deliver comfort
I know twin boys who kept their blankets, even when they were down to shreds, in the freezer during the day so they would be nice and cool come bedtime.

My next door neighbor, 3-year-old Oliver Petrillo, used to rub his mom's ears when he was sleepy or needed comforting. If she wasn't around he'd use his own.

And I heard of a little girl who always reached for her grandmother's slip when she was ready to curl up and relax. The grandmother eventually cut a square off her slip to give to her granddaughter for times when she needed that special security and Grandma wasn't around.

Most kids find comfort in soft blankets or a well-worn stuffed animal, but some get attached to some pretty out of the ordinary stuff. This just proves it doesn't really matter what a security object is, as long as it's something that makes kids feel safe, relaxed or in their normal routine.

"My daughter, Cady, age 21/2, has since I can remember, used her belly button for security. I couldn't even put her in onesies because she had to have access," said Clarissa Hughes, a Redington Beach mom. "She still says, "Mommy, I need my belly button,' if she can't get to it. Good thing for me it's something I will never leave at home."

Ah, yes, those items that aren't attached to the body do get lost, and parents go to extremes to retrieve them. I have friends who have been in the trash bins behind grocery stores and restaurants more than once.

Tammie Allender's son, who is now 8, once lost his beloved stuffed mouse named Cheeser. So the St. Petersburg mom put an "ad" on the Internet hoping someone might have found him.

"Okay, I admit it. I went on the Internet and bought him a new one. It was a Ty Beanie Baby mouse. I told him that a nice couple found Cheeser, fixed him up and sent him back," she told me.

Some friends of mine in Tampa decided to be prepared if they ever lost their son's beloved frog named Pongo.

"He's had this stuffed frog since he was about 2 weeks old when my Dad gave it to him," said Rich Whiteley, father of John Banks, age 2. "Knowing what good friends they had become, we were thinking it was probably a good idea to have a backup, so we bought a second one and we hid it in the closet." From time to time John's parents started switching in the sub frog when they had to wash the original.

"One morning he came in the kitchen and we forgot we had the (substitute) frog in the washing machine which has a glass front. He was all sleepy eyed, then he was just sitting there looking so upset watching Pongo No. 2 in the washing machine going around and around pressed up against the glass," Whiteley recounted. "So we quickly explained that was Pongo's brother Pingo who had come for a visit." VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Quilting Up a Storm
After a week of cutting, piecing, ironing, basting and sewing, members and friends from "Thursdays" produced 46 quilts for children left homeless by the Katrina storm. Pictured on the deck of the Sandbox Community Room at Beachcombers Haven in Gleneden Beach are a sample of the quilts along with some of the 32 people who contributed talent, time and materials to make it all happen. Twenty additional quilts were also donated, bring the total to 66. The quilts, along with over 100 Beanie Babies and stuffed animals, were delivered to Northwest Medical Teams in Portland for distribution to children in need. VIEW FULL ARTICLE & PHOTO HERE

Beanie Babies: New Weapon for Iraq
4,000 Beanie Babies are headed to Iraqi children thanks to Tom Campbell and his volunteer troops and their belief in the power of toys to make a difference. He said, "My gosh every kid needs a toy to play with...every kid needs something to do with their time."

Since 1982 Tom's organization - Kids helping Kids - has gathered good used toys and distributed them to children who need them. But the idea to send them to Iraq is a new extension of the program.

Stephanie Rolston was responsible for getting most of the toys in today's Beanie Baby parade donated because she has a personal interest in the initiative. Her husband, Sgt. Donald Rolston, is serving in Iraq and missing his daughters Zoe and Miranda.

Stephanie said, "There's a little girl that he kept seeing as he'd go to work everyday that would come out and wave to him. It pulled at his heart strings to think that he could help out another little girl when he couldn't be home with his." VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

'Catch A Meanie, Give A Beanie' a big hit in Valley
The folks at WPFB-FM (105.9) in Middletown asked and listeners answered big-time by showering the country music radio station with more than 30,000 Beanie Babies-type toys.

To celebrate that outpouring of goodwill, the station is throwing a party to thank those who made donations.

It all began a couple of months ago when WPFB officials asked listeners to donate to "Operation: Catch A Meanie, Give A Beanie," a project to provide toys to the military to dispense to children in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"To date, we have more than 26,000 Beanie-type toys counted and packaged, with more still to be counted," said Flyin' Brian Holsten, an on-air personality at the station.

"Our soldiers," he added, "will give the toys to the children and that will create friendships, and possibly lead to information about terrorist activities in those areas."

The WPFB-sponsored "Beanies For Deployment Party" will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Voice of America complex on Tylersville Road in West Chester. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

It basicly is a bigger version of Pocus the Halloweenie Beanie. In 2003 there were 143 Beanies released and 121 retired. Last year, 221 were released and 190 retired. So far in 2005, 136 have been realeased and 82 retired. We are 5/6ths through the year and have only had half the retirements seen last year, when all other trends seem equal. Beanie Un-Officials are wondering "were have all the retirements gone?"

Last year at this time year 30 beanies had retired, this year 11. Retirements are closer than ever to extinction.

We unfortunately report that Brigitte and Unity have given up on hopes of retirement and are not handling the dissapointment well, while on the other hand, the 2 Schweethearts are looking forward to their fate of being current forever. PATRIOT DAY
Partial posting from the Wikipedia online encyclopedia: "In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of those who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks. However, the name does not seem to have caught on in the American vernacular; most people still refer to the day as "September 11" or some variation thereof."

U.S. House Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407-0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day." President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (as Public Law 107-89). As such, it is not an official public holiday, but rather a discretionary day of remembrance.

On September 4, 2002, President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day. He has continued to make similar declarations every year since.

On this day, the President directs that the flag of the United States be flown at half-mast and displayed from individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 A.M. (Eastern Daylight Time) marking the first plane crash on September 11." TO LEARN MORE CLICK HERE

KATRINA DONATIONS
Yesterday, while watching U.S. Open tennis, I decided to go through my piles and piles of Beanie Baby trading cards, to make up some packages for the Katrina donation. Originally I was going to have packages of 50 cards, no two cards alike in a pack. Then I decided to cut those down to 25 cards per package so they could be given to twice as many kids. 750 cards later, I came up with just 30 packages of 25. It's a good thing I have ample supply of Ziploc bags. LOL I may be doing more today. It's hard work - laying them all out around the floor then leaning over to pick up the cards. Great for stretching!! LOL

If you have extra Beanie cards and nothing to do with them.. please consider doing what I'm doing. The kids will love to have these cards to look and learn more about their Beanies while they are cuddling the Beanies that are also being donated.

Cohen: The perfect store turns 10
Over Labor Day weekend 10 years ago, a programmer named Pierre Omidyar took a chance on an odd little Web site called AuctionWeb.

Most of Silicon Valley spent the summer of 1995 dreaming up ways to use a newfangled technology called the Internet. This was his: An auction site that let anyone list an item or place a bid. He wrote the code in his spare bedroom and posted it on his personal home page, which had the whimsical domain name www.ebay.com.

Omidyar wanted to create a perfect market, something economists had only imagined, where everything sold for its ideal price. He was also a populist. It looked to Omidyar, who had a ponytail and wore Birkenstocks, as if the freewheeling Internet was being taken over by well-financed dot-coms. He wanted to "give the individual the power to be a producer as well as a consumer."

Everyone told him that strangers wouldn't trade online with strangers, particularly in a format as unwieldy as an auction. But first the techies came, buying and selling computer parts. Then the collectors came — at one point, more than 6 percent of all sales were for Beanie Babies. Then everyone came.

EBay, with 64 million active users, is on track to sell more than $40 billion in goods this year. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Purple crayon becomes sign of caring
Children see, respond to the hurt of other kids
Somewhere in the rolling flat riches of Illinois, a little boy was watching the news.

He watched as the levees burst open and bathed New Orleans in filth, disease and crime.

Maybe he heard about the Louisiana Superdome, where thousands of Americans sought refuge from the storm, or about looters that sniped at police officers and rescue helicopters that tried to lift the sick and dying to hospitals.

But the young child, only 4 or 5 years old, couldn’t wrap his happy, little boy thoughts around the words “homeless” or “catastrophe.”

He did, though, understand it was sad so many children like him would have to find new schools and grow up without moms and dads.

So he rifled through the only things he had — toys — picking out stuffed bears, tigers, rabbits and other animals he liked to play with and, thinking the sad children might like to play with them too, placing them in a cardboard box.

He wanted to tell those other children something — maybe that he’s sorry for all of this and that these are really good toys — so he asked his mom for a sheet of paper and a purple crayon.

His mom smiled, dug out the implements from a drawer, and handed them to her boy. The child went to work, gripping the crayon with his whole fist, his tongue sticking out the corner of his lips.

There, he thought, that’s good, admiring the few words and heart he scrawled out before stuffing it somewhere in the box of toys and jumping to the next order of the day — swinging on the swing set.

Scrawled in purple handwriting is the note Plainfield resident Andy Harris found — and has since kept in his pick-up truck for the past week. He doesn’t even know the child or mom that dropped off the box.

“Some things you just can’t describe what it means to you,” Harris said. “That’s one of them. It means a lot. It means that kids do understand and they are thinking about those people, too. Some people might not think that, but they do.”

Saturday, when Harris arrives in Brandon, Miss., he will help unpack at the Crossgate Baptist Church a 48-foot semi-trailer crammed with water, food, toiletries and a box of stuffed animals.

Afterwards, when the truck is unpacked and the congregation has enough supplies to last until supplies run out, Harris will present the note to the church and read again the child’s crayoned words that choke his voice and squeeze tears from his eyes:

“I will pray for you”

———

“If Everybody Does Their Part, It Becomes A Big Deal”

“I just put myself in the kids’ place,” said Coal City resident Marsha Kopeika.

“I would be scared and I wouldn’t know what to do. You see the grownups and they’re scared. I’d think that, ‘Hey, I have this Beanie Baby to cuddle.’

“It’s an awful thing and I know that some kids don’t even have their parents yet. [Beanie Babies] are something every child can relate to, something warm and fuzzy.

“I’m thinking I love kids and they would just love toys like that. First thing I thought of — not food, not water — toys. I hope they don’t just dump them.”

A tub-full of around 60 tagged and bagged Beanie Babies, donated to the Harris truckload, could help ease their pain, Kopeika said.

Her daughter, Monica Krapek, Plainfield resident and neighbor of Harris, followed suit.

“I probably cried once a day watching it,” Krapek said. “It’s very heartbreaking and I’m sad that Bush and the government took so long to react when it’s our own country. I can’t stand watching people suffer; it’s so heartbreaking. That’s why we’re doing it on our end, because it makes a difference to them.

“I have a 4-month-old myself and I couldn’t imagine being there and that happening.”

Krapek scoured her house for help, rounding up 50 bars of soap, stuffed animals, pantry food, bottled water, baby shampoo and plastic spoons. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

TY NOW OFFERS THE "I LOVE" TRIO AT RETAIL
Ty will donate $1 per bear to the American Red Cross when you purchase Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi at your Ty retail stores. http://www.ty.com/AL_MS_LA_Retailer

~~ Thank you to Barbara for alerting me to this announcement and for sharing her comments.

Barbara writes: Good Evening Lisa, As you know I read your newsletter all the time and I would like to say that I appreciate all you do to keep collectors updated.

I know that you are gathering some things to be donated to help the hurricane relief effort. I had intended to send you a bunch of stuff but I just found out that my husband's employer is also doing the same thing in my area of Illinois.

I was just checking the Ty site and noticed that once again Ty has listened to his collectors. So many were complaining that the three new beanies for hurricane relief were only offered at the Ty store. So now we will have the same bears offered at retailers...but who will gain from all these bears that are supposed to help the needy???

Ty will be laughing all the way to the bank. The first set of bears, only $2.00 per beanie goes to Red Cross, the retailer version only $1.00 per beanie goes to Red Cross. With all the profits Ty will make he can start up his new trademark for Kona Beer & Kona Pure water. What a joke!!!

Thanks for letting me vent, I'm so heart sick looking at the news and all the devastation and other people can only think of buying that next beanie. I won't be buying any beanies or any other collectibles in a long time, I just can't see spending money on frivolous stuff when so many don't have a place to live and food to eat. Barbara"

"Hi Lisa, In case you didn't hear the World News Tonight, tonight-they said there are scam artists out there with very convincing emails to donate to the Red Cross by donating through a website that looks like the Red Cross website with even a secure lock on the page for your credit card----PLEASE be advised-the Red Cross does not send out emails to donate--if you feel to do so you are the one to go to their website or donation center or mail out your donations.  I am writing as I received one of those very email tonight....they also said on the news that it can take months before you even notice your credit card statement..and your credit compromised these fund are going overseas to other countries, they said (the authorities) that they noticed as soon as Katrina was spotted and known to be a big hurricane they had a large amount of new websites with the Katrina name...all scammers...so beware-I am sending this to everyone I know in case they missed the news tonight.  Take care all, Laura" VIEW FULL ABC NEWS ARTICLE HERE

Laura writes: "Last paragraph states: The Red Cross never sends out e-mail solicitations. Anyone who receives one can assume it is a fake. Under the Patriot Act, impersonating an agent of the Red Cross is considered a felony and punishable by up to five years in prison."

YOUR THOUGHTS
Barbara writes: "
Hi Lisa, Hope you and yours had a nice holiday weekend. Our family gathered together this weekend to give Thanks for all we have and to see what we can do to help the people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Our hearts are breaking watching all the devastation and loss of life.

Since so many people have been asking for beanies to help the relief effort Ty has made 3 bears for collectors to buy. He will be donating 2.00 per beanie and I'm sure many will be buying them. I do not intend to buy any because I would rather give what I would have spent on 3 beanies $20.51 directly to Red Cross/Salvation Army instead of only 6.00. I will continue to donate to my favorite charities to help in any way I can.

Many companies are matching the donations that employees make, now if Ty did the same I might consider buying 3 beanies for $15.00 excluding the s/h & tax and Ty would donate $30.00 instead of only $6.00.

Del. Guard will tote toys to Iraq
Platoon deploying to war zone will take along donated Beanie Babies
Delaware Army National Guard engineers bound for Iraq this month will bring along their tools and equipment when they board the aircraft that will take them there.

And Beanie Babies.

Lots of them.

The Beanie Babies have been collected by the RGW Foundation to honor Cpl. Stephen McGowan, a paratrooper who was killed in March while on duty in Iraq. McGowan, a 1996 St. Mark's High School graduate, gave out Beanie Babies and other toys to Iraqi children when he and his unit were on patrol. In one of his last letters home he asked his family and friends to send him more toys instead of Christmas presents.

When foundation co-founder Jennifer Hawkins heard that the Guard's 160th Engineer Company was sending a platoon to Iraq, she wondered if the soldiers would be interested in taking along a bunch of Beanie Babies.

Hawkins was fairly certain the engineers would want to be part of the toy project. After all, the foundation had already sent thousands of Beanie Babies to Iraq in care of the Delaware National Guard's Company B of the 150th Aviation Regiment. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Local youngsters serve up lemonade for Katrina relief
Finding themselves with only six homemade chocolate chip cookies left, Gregory and Matthew Cook decided to call it a day.

The Hopkinton brothers and neighbor Tim O'Malley spent three hours Saturday selling cookies and pink lemonade to benefit those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

"We had six left, so my brother, me and our friend each ate two," said 11-year-old Matthew Cook.

The sweet treat was well-deserved for the three young men, who raised $167 through the sale. Matthew, Gregory, 14, and Tim, 11, were among a handful of area youngsters who sold beverages and baked goods this weekend to raise money for the American Red Cross.

Inspired by stories in the media of others their age making similar efforts, they decided to donate their time -- and a nice chunk of change that could have lined their pockets -- to hurricane relief.

Children were seen this weekend selling food and beverages in Hopkinton, Natick, Westborough and elsewhere.

"I am incredibly proud," said Stephanie Cook, Matthew and Gregory's mother. She said her sons were watching numerous reports about the hurricane last week and wanted desperately to help.

"I feel bad about the people losing their families, houses and the kids losing their toys," Matthew Cook said. "Maybe they can use some of the money to buy a Beanie (baby) or something." VIEW FULL ARTICLE & PHOTO HERE

Sending love to littlest victims
When Mike Capalare heard about the suffering Hurricane Katrina that blew into his former home of Louisiana, he thought of his days working as a Baton Rouge schoolteacher.

He also thought about a particular student - a young girl named Taylor who once presented him with a Beanie Baby gift.

And he remembered that after it sat on his desk for the 2002-2003 school year, he returned the small stuffed animal to the pleased girl.

"That popped into my head," said the Portsmouth resident.

So too did the idea of collecting stuffed animals for young hurricane victims as a way to send them some love. So anyone who passed through Market Square over the weekend saw Capalare’s impromptu stuffed animal collection station. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Retired New Castle County police Capt. George Williamson started sending soccer balls to his son, Elwood Gilger, in Iraq soon after Gilger arrived there in March. Gilger, a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, dropped them to children in rural areas.

Williamson originally hoped to send his son 50 soccer balls. By July, he had sent about 200. Now, he's sent more than 400, and the numbers continue to rise.

"You really feel sorry," for Iraqis, Williamson said.

Williamson recently received $1,000 donations from the New Castle County executive branch and the County Council to keep the soccer ball project going. By the middle of September, when he will end the project, Williamson hopes to have sent 800 balls to Iraq.

Now as Gilger flies over rural villages, kids run toward his helicopter, not away from it. When he drops the soccer balls from about 50 feet, the kids sprint toward them.

Amid growing debate about how much good U.S. armed forces are doing in the Middle East, Gilger and his unit from the Delaware Army National Guard are making sure their presence is appreciated.

"Most of these children have probably never seen a Beanie Baby or a soccer ball," Gilger wrote in a recent e-mail from Iraq. "And soccer is this country's major sport."

Williamson arranged a deal with Biden Sports, in Seattle, to purchase the balls in bulk.

Originally, he bought "Stars and Stripes" balls with red, white and blue images across them. Then Gilger began to worry that Iraqi insurgents might harm children playing with such USA-centric balls.

Gilger, a 34-year-old New Castle County police officer, made sure to distribute the "Stars and Stripes" balls only in Kurdish territories, where the insurgency has not been so active. VIEW FULL ARTICLE HERE

Mission to Mexico
Ten young people from the Eagle Bend Assembly of God Church spent ten days in Mexico on a mission trip. They went with two other youth groups from Mankato and St. Louis Park for a total of 35 people. Those who went from Eagle Bend were: Pastor Bob Kaumans, Josh Kaumans, Travis Cook, Danae Thorson, Patsy Jorgenson, Ben, Michaela and Pat Hodge, and Candice and Brianna Young.
"The goal was to win souls for God in Mexico," said Josh.
Danae agreed and added that witnessing to little children was also an important part.
The trip was from August 9 through August 19 and they took a coach bus all the way there. The trip was sponsored by Dove International from Glenwood, who did all the booking and provided the bus for the trip. They sponsor many mission trips.
"They take care of all the connections and what the teams will do," said Pastor Kaumans.
They drove straight through to San Antonio, Texas and took a tour of the Alamo while there.
Then it was off to Saltillo, Mexico, a city of about a million people.
The group went to a disadvantaged part of the city and put on a Vacation Bible School (VBS) program for a couple of days.
"A lot of people came. First there were a lot of kids. We told them if they brought back their parents for the evening service they would each get a Beanie Baby," said Josh.
"Most of them ran off to go home and get their parents," said Danae. VIEW FULL ARTICLE & PHOTOS HERE

GREAT IDEA
Barbara writes: "Hi Lisa, Hope all is well with you and yours. I've been reading the Ty site and so many people are asking for a beanie to help the devastated areas hit by Hurricane Katrina. I do not think it would be a good idea to make a beanie for any natural disasters because we have so many. California has earthquakes, some states have Tornadoes and some suffer the devastation of hurricanes. At this time of need we should all look to help out as much as we can, not by buying beanies but by financial support, volunteer to help, open our doors to help the homeless.

The company that my husband works for has pledged to match donations that employees make. It would be nice if Ty put the Red Cross banner on the home page and matched the donations made by everyone using that link.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible tragedy, especially those who have lost Loved ones.

Have a nice Labor Day Holiday. Barbara"
